Smells

Tazmanian devil just mentioned in a post about turning a piece of pine which smelt of vomit. It got me thinking - what do woods smell of when turning, and which are the nicest?

I can imagine Cedar and Eucalyptus would smell like you expect - but I have some bits of an unidentified conifer outside the backdoor which filled the air with the smell of sweetcorn.

When I turned some cherry, it definitely smelt like a well baked crusty cherry pie. But does apple smell like apples? I've never had any to find out.

What do you all find other woods smell of - and what are the nicest?

Stawberry jam wood.... that smelt of ...........
Also some oak from whisky barrels smelt not suprisingly of whisky

Olive obviously smells of olive oil and exotic tulip wood has a very distinctive smell. My favorite is Mahuhu. What makes me laugh though is that on a craft stand, everyone says they love the smell of wood. It's the polish they are smelling!! Apart from Cedar and Olive.

The best for me is Oak.
The worst had to be that Parana Pine I posted for ID recently.

I've got some lovely Turkey Oak but it doesn't smell of Christmas Dinner :ho2 :ho2 :ho2

I have got to admit that I love the smell of the wood I hate the most and very very rarely work in - Red Pine - that fresh resinous smell is beautiful but I just hate pine furniture. No offence to any pine lovers out there meant.

I had someone cutting it in my workshop yesterday but I couldn't smell the chocolate

My favourite has always been Camphor Laurel, not only is there a wonderful scent but you wind up with the clearest sinuses in the district!!!

Sounds like it's worth keeping a small stock of Camphor for when I next get a cold Peter. Sounds like a nice way to self-medicate.

The first time I turned ABW I too was amaised at the chokky smell. I thought it must have been me, so I'm glad someone else likes it too..

Cedar is lovely to turn and smell too.

turning some wet cherry today and overwhelmed by the lovely smell of cinnamon, although its not that nice a smell when you microwave it
