nor have I bit anyones head off. Not even climbing the walls :)

24 hours since my last *** :D :D

. . . or as I say: if you can do 1 day, you can do 2. If you can do 2, you can do 4. . .

I've just done 8 months using that psychology.

Well done and keep it up.

I have never smoked so don't fully understand what you are going through but am very against smoking.

My father died at 52 from a smoking related illness and that was 20 years ago, at the time I thought he was getting on a bit, I am now 52, so the same age, I still feel young, it really brings it home just how young he was. I still miss my father like mad, my son knew him but my daughter was born after he died. Sorry, a bit depressing but it is a bit of a soap box subject for me.

And then there is the money you will save.

And finally, you smell better now! :D

Don't give in.

Mick

Hi,

Yep good work, I gave up years ago, the first two weeks where the worst, after that I couldn't stand the smell of smoke.

Pete

Keep strong, Andy!
A month after giving up a 30 year+ habit, (which he found strangely easy), my grandfather, then in his mid-forties declared he'd never felt so healthy and couldn't understand why he started in the first place.
Fortunately, I never did start in the first place.

Just think, with the money saved, you'll soon be able to buy that Lie-Nielson no. 8, or a couple of Cliftons!

Smoking in a woodworking shop is a very bad idea anyway.

cheers guys.

It has been quite easy to press although I have had some help in the form of some drug for the last week or so.

On the money side of things it not just the cost of the ****. I had a flyer through the letterbox last week from the AA pushing life insurance. I can't put my hand on it but it was something like 26 quid a month with 150K pay out if you peg it as a smoker. However the same 26 quid was £300k+ for a non smoker!

I smoked 10 Castella Classic cigars a day (and inhaled them) then one day i decided enough was enough and stopped, I spent a fortune on nicorette gum and other assorted 'fixes', until I just bit the bullet and used nothing but will power, what also helped was a work colleague who bet me a fiver I would be smoking again within 12 months, I'm stubborn as hell so I am proud to say I won the bet (although he never paid up) because all this happened about 15 years ago.

So I bet you a fiver you will start smoking again within a year, are you up for it?

Also put away what you would have spent on cigs and buy something you really want but dont really need.

Stew

I did over 20 yrs ago when the only help was will power, as Pete says, the first couple of weeks were the worst, the only way IMO is one *** at a time.
I was on 50 a day, I often wonder how much I've saved money wise since.

Roy.

At current prices (say average 6 quid a box):

£15 per day x 365 = £5,475 x 20 = £109,500

A small fortune.

I'm the same as Mick here as I've never been a smoker, but I can understand what you're going through. You'll also (so I understand) taste your food better and may tend to eat more! - Rob

I quit this last new year, as has been said above, the first 1-2 weeks is the toughest. It gets progressively easier from then on. If you ever get tempted then wait a few minutes thinking about that horrible dry dirty cigarette making you and your clothes stink and your teeth and mouth turn a horrible stale colour. If you are using willpower only then this visual imagery worked wonders.

Good luck with it. _Dan.

The tablets, without me trying, have made me cut down over the last week. I was on 25-30 a day but got down to about 10-15ish. Less ****=more food, put 1/2 stone on last week :)

Time to get the bike out...nice and flat round Boston   - Rob

Good on you Andy.
My tactic was to say 'I'll have a *** after tea.'
When the time came around I said, 'I'll wait a bit longer just to see.'
I've been waiting thirty-odd years now!
Wasn't easy, and I didn't use any substitutes other than wine gums! I don't eat the wine gums any more (Well not often) and I found the first 14 to 21 days were the worst.

And what Stew said... After all all these years smoking you have been buying something you wanted rather than needed anyway; so it might as well be an extra woodworking tool!

Although, Every so often (in a blue-moon) I do automatically reach for my ****. But the thought soon passes.
So stick with it.

John :)

To all those who have just given up, here's a piece of advice from my father. When you have given up, don't get tempted at a Christmas party. He had to do it all over again and it was MUCH worse!

I have never smoked because I hated the smell. When my parents went away for a few days, the smell of the house became better and better so that I really enjoyed it JUST before they returned to fill it with smoke again!

All of you keep it up, it is worth it in the end

Phil

Hey, congrats on the newly turned non-smokers! I just checked my ticker today and have been 175 days smoke-free yay! Keep it up, everybody, it's easier than it seems the first two days and it's definitely worth it!

Go for it mate =D> In november it will be 2 years since I gave up and I don't regret one minute of it. You can get patches, tablets and various other things, but the help I received did not come from my doctor or chemist, it came from my wife and members of this forum whos, encouragement was vital.

Good luck

Mike

Didn't work for me - just putting off the evil hour and keeping the addiction lively.
What worked was simply to stop completely and put up with the nervous twitching - which can be intense but is always short lived and eventually stops altogether.
I told myself that the stronger the craving the harder the monkey on my back was struggling to survive i.e. the craving is a thing to be welcomed and means you are winning the fight.
Kinda "no pain, no gain"
