    Gilding advice

Thanks guys - more than enough to get my teeth into. Its annoying though that unless you use exactly the right phrasing in search engines you have next to no chance of finding these people. Trust me using the words latex, film and spray turns up a host of sites that have nothing to do with...

    Gilding advice

unless I build a router cradle that rides slightly above the surface which may well do the trick. Thanks Where might I find masking fluid please in larger volumes than 75ml!? I also know that while a little goes a long way 30ml pots is probably not the most economical. Does anyone know of...

    Gilding advice

Yeah I suppose that would work. I'm trying to reduce the number of operations though and Idon't know whether it would be as quick to do several masking jobs per piece as to be very careful with the brush? Where's an apprentice when you need one! Cheers Tim

    Gilding advice

Thanks guys Jason - my concern is that my skill in brushing size may be as good as brushing gilt varnish ie wherever it goes, the leaf will stick. What I want to try to do is protect anything other than the flutes so that I can have the odd 'stray over the line' without it being too much of a...

    Gilding advice

I need to do some (ok a fair amount) of gilding on the library project I'm working on. The client is relaxed about not using gold leaf to keep the cost realistoc so I'm considering either gilt wax or gilt varnish. Having done a few practise pieces, I am reasonably confident about being able to...

    Flippin' car accident

Glad to hear you are okay. My dad had a similar experience with an espace dropping its spare in front of him on the M6 (fast lane). He decided to drive straight over it (with it under the middle of his car) rather than risk flipping by using one set of wheels over it. Obviously it knackered...

    Another Kitchen Design Q

The only thing I'm aware of is the positioning of wall cabinets in relation to hobs. There are various height restrictions depending on the heat source but these are normally laid out in the hob installation guides. Maybe worth checking with manufacturers for specifics. I also don't know...

    Routing fluted panels

This is what I mean: with the router fixed in two places to cut all 4 slots using a guide bush to centre on the hole so that fixing/ refixing isn't a nightmare. Does anyone see a major flaw with this - having pondered over the problem for a while I'm not so sure that I haven't made a ****...

    Routing fluted panels

Thanks everyone. I discounted the rat and similar because of the length of some of the pieces - would require a 6.5m clear run! The guided channel was also one I considered and rejected it in principle because I had the same thought as Steve that in a narrow strip of 70mm the guide slots could...

    Routing fluted panels

I have a whole bunch of panels (40 or so)to rout flutes into in the next few weeks. They are all 70mm wide and 20mm thick and vary in length from around 750mm to 2800mm. I am trying to come up with a cunning plan/ jig to simplify the process. The flutes will be stopped and there will be four...

    Pricing Work

Most of my work is built in - therefore has no value unless its for the client. I charge 40% deposit, 50% on delivery/ installation and 10% remains as a snagging fee. It may not be well known but in law, once you install a kitchen etc, you the tradesman lose any right of lien or retention on...

    My first Salmon!

Andy, Haven't had the fish yet - sent it off to the smokery - should be back in a month. Because you are only allowed two fish per rod (to keep) I thought I'd make it last. Wizer - if you get the chance you really should go. They do hire out spare days. Cheers Tim

    My first Salmon!

Just returned from a magic holiday on the River Conon just north west of Inverness as guests of a pal who has a beat up there. Never been flyfishing before but to pun badly I am hooked! My first salmon pictured below (6.5lb) with me having been 'blooded' (not sure about that if I'm honest)...

    Edging and edgebanders

I need to edge a whole bunch of shelves (made from birch ply) that will then be painted. Firstly does anyone know of a manmade glue on edge that can be painted since trimming veneer ones is a real PITA? Secondly, I've never used an edgebander but given that I have at least 150 shelves to do...

    Mission Impossible 1 & 2

Received a pretty big commission today (okay the biggest one for me yet). Its for the same clients that I did these for: https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=111925#111925 https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?p=111918#111918 We were originally in discussion about...

    Painted kitchen

Just finished this kitchen. Walnut worktops. Paint is 'Alabaster' by Fired Earth. Corbels under the shelves were made to match the corbels under the windows outside. Plate rack dowels are also in walnut to match the worktops Cheers Tim
