SIP Bandsaw - whats the opinion on this...

I can't disagree with anything that Erik has said. :-) For your first bandsaw, these really do represent very good value for money. From memory, I bought mine from West Skelton Services through eBay and, at the time (2006), it cost just over £200 including delivery. 8-) It's probably gone up in...

    Dewalt thicknesser

I'm quite certain they're not available in the UK - for whatever reason?! You'd have to import one :? or, keep an eye on eBay and perhaps you'd get lucky and find someone over here who's previously imported and is now looking to sell. My understanding is that they're just as noisy as all the...

    black american walnut

As it's an imported species, I wouldn't be surprised if prices have gone up since but, sometime last year, I would've expected to be paying £45-50 per cubic foot for 1in sawn boards with two square edges... Just had a look at Interesting Timbers' recently updated price list and has gone up to...

    Round dogs

If you're worried about round dogs dropping through the holes and you have the facilities to make your own dowel rod, you could consider making a batch of them like this, with square tops on them: I got the idea from Scott Landis' excellent book. If you don't have a lathe or router table, you...

    New Axminster panel saw

...Well, at that price, I'd hope it would last a bit longer than twelve-months!! :-D ;-) Sounds like you're very happy with your new toy - but, where are the photos?! ;-)

    Should I get an SCMS?

I'm a big fan of mitre saws, particularly where your workshop doesn't allow you all the necessary freedom of a half-decent table saw. An alternative to Roger's suggestion would be to build a kind of cross-cutting jig for your hand-held circular saw - you're bound to have or want one of those if...

    Warped jointer fence

Are you certain that your tables are in perfect alignment (or, as good as)? That could account for the difference. Otherwise, you fix sounds fine; I'm sure the majority of us would do something very similar. You may find that double-sided tape is enough to hold it in place or, if it's only...

Through mortice: My stupidest noob mistake

Yes, same here - chisel in from both sides. Some also favour leaving the last 2-3mm at each end of a mortise, so that you can then use the chisel to carefully lever out the chips without creating any unnecessary dents or damage. It sounds as though you may have gotten a little bit carried...

Cellar workshop build - loads of pics

The really depressing part is that his "sawmill" is more than double the size of most of our own workshops!!! :P ;-)

    gas nail guns

I noticed this DeWalt nailgun the other day and thought the price was quite good, considering that it comes with two batteries. Whether or not it's suitable though, depends on your requirements (as questioned by a couple of people already). DeWalt also have a couple of other models available...

    Signs

Until recently, there was a similar problem near me with another T-junction (albeit on a minor road though, not a dual-carriageway). The solution was to put a mini roundabout in its place - which, I must say, has greatly improved things, including the ease of turning right out of the junction...

    Why no lights?

I noticed the same thing very early this morning. I also get frustrated by people driving around with their lights on during a clear, sunny day - for their benefit, I would like to assume that this is so they can see their dashboard clearly but, we know that's certainly not always the case...

    Velcro backed sandpaper recommendations

I had the exact same problem with the same model on only its second day of use, almost two-years ago to the day. Although my sander is still covered by the warranty, I've never bothered to get it fixed (I suspect it would only break again... :-P). I have been happily using velcro-backed abrasive...

    TS200 Cutting Capacity

Okay, sorry, I understand what you are saying, now... 3mm, though?!? Health & Safety regs. state that the riving knife should be no more than 8mm away from the back of the blade when measured at the bed level. It sounds like you've actually improved the situation, if you ask me! ;-)

20" Wooden Jointer Plane Build - WIP - Lots of photo's

Looking good so far, Jamie. :-) Of the three designs you've posted, I prefer the third one. I think you might benefit from having some 'bulk' at the toe end to hold on to. Then again, perhaps jointer's are different to short smoothing planes? This is a smoother/large block plane that I made...

Darn! Wish I'd thought of that!! ](*,) Got my new Cookies with the Risers yesterday but the Cones are out of stock until the end of this month.

    TS200 Cutting Capacity

There's a similar problem with the Elektra Beckum PK200 that I have... On my saw, the riving knife is slotted so that you can raise it up enough. I've got a feeling that some TS-200 owners, here, might have modified their riving knives in the past? Might be worth searching through some old...

Bought a new compact mitre saw

Looks like an interesting purchase and it would be interesting to hear how you get on with this one - is it as accurate and reliable as your previous saw, etc. Wizer also bought one of these last year (110v) but, I don't think he's had much time to use it properly. Could you use one of these...

dovetail jig that doesnt need router?

I'm sure that David Barron also produces something very similar to these (perhaps a little bit cheaper) but, I don't know what his website is, if he has one for his tools? I remember seeing them at Yandles, two-years ago.

    how bigs your shop?

Less than 18ft long by 10ft wide (it's a metric 5.4m x 3m inside). Walls are 7ft (2.1m) tall with just over 3ft above that to the pitch of the roof.
