    Dressing up

I clean the 80grit white wheel with a devil stone whenever it's looking dirty. I do this hand held. Every now and again I use a tool with diamonds suspended in some sort of metal. The head is about 1cm across. This is held in my Trugrind jig. It doesn't actually leave a flat wheel because I...

    Yew pepper grinder?

I've just read the article again (WT issue 192, page 30) and it says to seal the hole with melamine spray. However, I've just looked the nutmeg grinder (WT issue 172, page 71) and there's nothing used inside the hole

    Yew pepper grinder?

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I think I'll also post the question on the Woodturning magazine website. It's frequented by the magazine editor and other regular contributors so it'll be interesting to see what they say

    Dust Mask Question

I bought one about 3 years ago and never got on with it. It could be because I bought one that was too small, but it never seemed to keep all the dust out no matter how I adjusted it. I've since replaced it with a Powercap.

    Can't wait to see more.

I only wish that I'd started that young. Better late than never (for me), I guess. Welcome to the board, Glen

    Yew pepper grinder?

I have a nice piece of yew that would be perfect as a pepper grinder, but I was wondering - is the timber is safe to use when it'll be in contact with the pepper corns? I've googled and found plenty of yew grinders, and yew was used for a kitchen product (can't remember what sort) in a...

George - great work, as always. Glad to see you back. I love the first piece in particular. Keep up the good work and all the best for the future Duncan

    Hollowing tool

I started off with the Sorby Multi tip hollowing tool. I found it easy to use and the flat section of the bar allowed controlled cutting edge placement (you always know the orientation of the cutter). It can also be used as a shear scraper so if you need to justify another purchase you can :D...

Sharpening Turning Tools: Options for the Beginner.

I use a Perform (from Axminster) grinder with a wide white wheel at one side and a thinner, coarse, grey wheel at the other. They don't sell it anymore but this in their white range appears the same. I've had it since 2004 and the white wheel is getting close to being replaced. When I looked at...

    Dust extraction

So an extractor can give a false sense of security as well? As has been discussed in various other threads - the best solution is a complete system which has an extractor, an ambient air filter and a good quality (preferably powered?) face mask. Even with these you need to ensure that you clean...

OK you asked for it ! , Statesman 280 Photo thread

Is it really worth the risk? The manufacturers recommend not using them for a reason - the tool is not designed for that purpose and the tang means that the tool is not as strong as a bowl gouge. You may get away with it fine until one day you get a strong catch and the gouge is bent in 2...

OK you asked for it ! , Statesman 280 Photo thread

All looks great until the last pic where Wizer appears to be turning a bowl blank with a roughing gouge  You may get away with it on the outside but I understand that even there it's not a great idea, and most manufacturers advise against it. A bowl gouge with a swept back grind is...

    Dust extraction

This is a photo which I took a couple of years ago to show how effective the Microclene 400 is... This is after approx 10 hours of turning dry wood. The stripe down the middle is where I vacuumed to show some contrast. At that time I only switched the Microclene on whilst sanding and when I...

    Dust extraction

It depends on where you put it. Mine is slightly left of the headstock, slightly behind the line of the bed and just above head height. My head isn't between the work and the filter so it draws dust away from me. As soon as I switch it on I can see air born sanding dust move towards it. The fact...

    Sycamore bowl

A great bowl and not too thick in my opinion. The only (small) negative I see is the writing in blue ink (unless it just looks that way because of the lighting). I think it would look much better in black. Duncan

    CA Glue

Brendan - don't assume that you'll be glueing bark on. If the wood/bark is in good enough condition it's perfectly possible that the bark will stay on throughout the turning process. It's very rare that I have to resort to gluing. To help bark retention make the outside cuts in the bark area in...

    An amusing video.

I saw them about 5 years ago in a juggling convention show. It was slightly different but still had the whole crowd in fits of laughter.

    CA Glue

The problem I have with larger bottles is that my CA glues have sometimes gone off (even decent brands) and so I end up throwing away part of the bottle. These days I tend to buy smaller bottles and accept that I'll be paying a little bit more. I use a variety of makes from cheap ones from...

    Thicknessing calipers

Neil I use a variety of calipers and also the wire method mentioned by Robo Hippy. I posted some pictures showing the technique here The wire came from B&Q The calipers I use are plastic and came from the Proops Brothers stall at the Harrogate show - I couldn't find the exact model on the...
