I have read many reviews / forum postd regarding how BAD it is to mount the work piece directly onto the motor drive shaft !!

BUT look at this , the Silverdrive does NOT do this at there is a drive coupling between the head stock front bearings and the motor , and the motor bolts the the head stock frame 8)

119_1947.jpg

The front bearings need greasing every 6000 hours  and there is a grease nipple fitted to do this

FULL variable speed from 0 to 2800 RPM with forward and reverse
119_1946.jpg

and the control box is magnetic so can be placed at any location

119_1945.jpg

BIG 3 phase motor controled by a inverter

More tuition / grease for the slope :p

Hope you all enjoyed the post

TRAITOR! TRAITOR! TRAITOR! :D :D :D

Can I ask Why is Wizer working at OUR lathe. The cheek of him

All looks great until the last pic where Wizer appears to be turning a bowl blank with a roughing gouge
You may get away with it on the outside but I understand that even there it's not a great idea, and most manufacturers advise against it.

A bowl gouge with a swept back grind is much safer, probably faster, and much more versatile

Only truing it to a cylinder

Then as you say , onto a bowl gouge :p

That bloody wizer... He turns up everywhere!

It wasn't til he took that pic that he mumbled "I haven't even had a go meself yet" ! I felt like a selfish kid ;)

Allen was very tollerant. I was more confident with roughing out this time, but struggled with forming the bowl shape on the bottom. We flipped it over and had a go hollowing out the middle. It took a long while but I (think) I started to get it. It's a rythmn thing.

..and the Statesman? built like a TANK! Lovely machine, oozes quality. It even has Irish controls....

Looks like a great lathe !

As duncanh said, there's no place for a roughing gouge in bowl/faceplate turning, takes too big a "bite" and invites dig-ins on the end grain parts of the blank (it's okay on a spindle as you are not cutting two sections of end grain on every rotation of the blank). Much safer and more satisfying to use a bowl gouge for rounding and everything else with bowl blanks.

Have fun ! :D

Cheers, Paul :D

Wow! Looks like a real monster.

Just one question - how did you transport it!?

A combination of :-

My trusty steed ( Fiat Doblo van )

A sack barrow

and trusty stead no2 ( Wheel barrow )

And lots of HUMPING with John.b ( no not that type of humping / take 2 )

:p

Possibly a inappropriate Irish joke there. The forward and Reverse switch is marked the wrong way around.. ;)

(I am marrying a nice Irish girl in a couple of weeks)

Best of luck with the wedding!! All Irish Girls are very nice, get her involved with the Turning and then everything can be her fault. You will be the gofor, new lathe, timber blanks, second set of tools, maybe a small lathe as well for little things. Begin as you mean to carry on.
Have to go now I have to put the dinner on   REgards Boysie.
