    Part P 'get out'?

As far as I am aware - and I cannot find a reference at the moment - Part P legislation defines competent as membership of an approved organization. So, even if you are not competent but belonged to, say NICEIC then you could sign it off but if you had years of experience and did not belong then...

    What the rain can do

Arrrgh! That was not what I wanted to see when I opened this post. I was warned against planting Californian Poppies because of their tendency to self seed and get everywhere. nevertheless I ignored the advice and after digging over the bed in a sunny position in the front garden sowed two...

    Accurate Straight edge

Isn't all this talk about engineering grade straight edges a little over the top? We are talking about wood here which is going to have some natural movement - probably at least the difference between an engineering grade straight edge and a 1m steel rule type straight edge. And it will then...

    Pressure washer recommendations?

This might help: http://www.diyfaq.org.uk/electrical/pre ... er_faq.htm no specific recommendations though. Andrew

    Online photo processing

Actually one of the things that I like the most is that you don't need dedicated uploading programs or java applets. They allow you to ftp direct to your storage space. Andrew

    Online photo processing

Another vote for Photobox here. Ordered seventy-odd prints Friday and they arrived Saturday morning. As far as I remember they have an offer on at the moment where you can get prints for 4p each if you do at least 500 of them. How many did you want? :-)

    Eurowiring

Are you sure its Red, Blue and Earth? I thought the reason the UK had gone to Brown/Blue for fixed wiring was to be the same as the rest of Europe. Andrew

    Road Tax query?

Except, as I found out when you receive the reminder from DVLA you can't then immediately do it on line. You have to wait until two weeks before it is due and by that time the reminder is under a pile of paperwork and you have forgotten about it. Andrew

    Must have!

Somebody obviously has too much time on their hands :-)

    Tormek 1206...

Unless I am mistaken the 1207 blue machine will not take the planer blade jig so if you want to sharpen planer blades then you need the 2007 green machine. Andrew

    Colour Laserjet? Printer Recommendations.....Help?

Do they ship colour lasers with full toner cartridges? I know that with inkjet the cartridges shipped with the printer are often only 'starter' cartridges and do not contain as much ink as a new one. So, at least with inkjet, doing that would no be cost effective. Andrew

SU: Aligning a shape perpendicular to a line

Thanks Dave, That is in effect pretty much what I have been doing. However having got a face perpendicular to the line the problem I am having is accurately aligning the shape to the face.I somehow feel that there must be an easy why - there usually is in SketchUp. Andrew

SU: Aligning a shape perpendicular to a line

Probably a simple way to do this in Sketchup but I can't find it and it's been bugging me for a while. I draw an arbitrary shape, say aligned with one of the axis. I then draw a line between two arbitrary points. How can I reposition the shape to one end of the line such that it is...

    Dovetails : Splitting the line?

Nah! Easy. I do it every time. I usually remove the first half of the line and leave the second half. If I am having an unusually cack-handed day I have been known to leave the first half and remove the second. :-) Andrew

    Northern on the rocks

Don't most banks raise most of their money from the markets? The problem with Northern Rock as I understand it was that they raised it by issuing short dated bonds but then lent it on 25 year mortgages. Their business model was to keep refinancing but they faced problems when that refinancing...

    Did you know?

That you can't count? :-) According to https://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/index.php there are (or were at the time of writing) 38907 posts in General Chant and 87263 in General Woodworking. So you have a lot of posts to make to catch up ;-) Andrew

    Floorboards

When you say crown down am I right in assuming you mean the centre of the tree? So that the rings as seen on the end of the plank rise towards the centre of the plank so that as it dries out the edges lift but are held down by the screws/nails. Andrew

    Floorboards

I did consider chipboard so it's not that heretical (The house was built in the late 40s so there is no specific requirement to retain original features) but chipboard seems to come tongue and grooved and I would like to keep reasonably easy access to the wiring underneath since pretty much all...
