    Shaping a chair seat

Went to Harrogate and had a play with various things. Came away with a Ray Iles inshave, and a travisher from Tom Thackray ... the latter works fantastically well, made a great pile of shavings without too much effort and left a clean surface without tearout ... much better than I achieved on my...

    Timber Yards\Suppliers - Yorks\Mancs

I'd be interested too - having been rather disappointed by Boddy's on a couple of occasions this year ...

    Anyone turned a lamp?

I have made a few - the biggest problem I have had is getting the coarse thread of the 610303 element screwed into the wood neatly and straight - holding it without wrecking the threads was some of the problem I've not worked out the best way of handling. I wondered if buying a tap would be the...

    sharpning

Not got a Tormek - but watched demos and it looks very good at what it does - but slow ... and costly. I do chisels, plane blades, etc (and skew chisels) with scary-sharp, and the rest of my turning and some other tools with the pro-edge ... it's really good for scrapers, roughing and bowl...

    Which dovetail saw?

I have a gentleman's saw - but the Veritas dovetail is MUCH nicer, and cuts much more accurately. Good tool

    Table saw Blade

I have just got one of their blades as a replacement for an old and probably blunting blade on a B&D circular saw ... now produces smooth clean cuts through oak and maple, makes them feel like MDF!

Oak pegs for kitchen peg rail

I made three recently for a small peg rail - I'm not the most skilled of turners to produce 10 identical copies however - but you'll find a lot who are in the turning forum ...

Slippery Slope bait ( Free to a good home ) NEW HOME FOUND

I have one quite like that I "inherited" when my Grandfather died a few years ago- it's what got me into this game - a 25 year old "Junior" in blue, and without the table or the protective cover for the drive belt, and although it has the platform thing shown on the left it doesn't have any of...

    Cheap planes

Agreed if I was buying and could afford - that's why I've got a Clifton 5 1/2 and a LV BUJ - but I can see that from Johns point of view they, or Matthews suggestions, might be worth a go, having seen the difference £50 of blade/iron made to my plane. I wouldn't buy a Clifton/LN No 4 I don't...

    Cheap planes

Worth thinking about ... is the cheap option "upgradeable"? I was given an old rusty No 4. Tried "fettling" it a bit - rubbed off the worst of the rust from the sole and side with wet and dry on my float glass, sharpened the blade properly, tried to flatten the tip of the chip breaker, etc...

New hand saws - which ones?

I was really impressed with the Veritas dovetail saw when I got hold of it - they might not be great, but cutting dovetails suddenly seemed like something I'd be able to do OK. Recommended. Another saw-choosing idea ... I'm looking for a larger crosscut tenon saw to replace the cheap'n'nasty...

    Making spoons ...

Thanks Richard I've made a few scoops like you show - but larger, good for cat food! Those spatulas are more like what I'm trying to do (nice work). Only larger - so maybe easier to hold with a larger and stronger handle to work on the blades? How do you shape those ... saw off the front and...

    Making spoons ...

Thanks everybody ... some helpful ideas ... except I hadn't been thinking of mounting the ball section on the lathe and hollowing out a circular cup ... now I'm going to give this a try. However ... if you were going to make a flatter/shallower spoon rather than a deep cupped hemispherical...

    Making spoons ...

I was visiting a friend of my partners who is a potter and was hosting her annual sale. She makes salt/sugar pots ... and after one conversation led to another she asked me if I could turn her some wooden spoons for these. I've been playing this weekend with bits of beech firewood - and made...

    Stop me buying a Wivamac!!!

I've got the Wivamac 6000 with the bowl extension and it's a very nice bit of kit indeed. I didn't look at the Jet but did like the VicMarc, but price and practicality ruled it out. I'd never get a VB into my basement, and don't think I'll ever have the skills to justify the benefits...

to buy or not to buy trend t11

I have one in a router table and it's been a great bit of kit - not played with lots of others to compare though. Agree also, that in a table, the Xtension is well worth getting - with that you have both through-table height adjustment and easy bit changes - much less fiddly!

Stop my bottom falling out of my drawers!

If I'm imagining this right, could you add some "mechanical" strength with a rebate in the front, not full width so it's not seen, that the floor could key into this?

    Pillar drill choice/offer?

A mate of mine asked me if this Scheppach-RAB-S16X floor drill was worth looking at? http://www.screwfix.com/prods/67197/Pow ... CSTHZOSFFQ I know nothing about these (I have a B&W "Quatro" mains hand drill that does me OK mostly) - apparently owning a lathe and a decent hand plane makes you...
