Any one have any recommendations for the above say within West Yorks (South & North at a push) and Manchester? I was going to use Lavers.

I'm after square edged boards in European\US Oak and\or Sapele? up to 3" thick - looking to make doors and windows for the new 'shop OR firewood.

Edit: The prices I'm getting at Lavers are

Sapele at £22.50 per cft
European Oak - £38.50 (1") to £59 (3") per cft.

All plus VAT.

Apparently the cft charge goes up as the thickness of European oak goes up. US oak prices are approx 15-20% cheaper that European. And from speaking to the chap they didn't seem too bothered if you wanted to select your boards.

Thanks for that Rob - just rung up and spoke to John, it seems that the prices at Laver's (there's one in Sheffield too) are extremely keen. Probably nip down there one lunctime this week and see the kind of stock they have.

Dibs,

British Hardwoods in Keighley is by far the best place for Oak in Yorkshire. Not sure if they do Sapele though.

Cheers Slim - I'd looked on there before for Oak - just hadn't spotted the 2nd tab for sawn prices. Their prices do look good, slightly more than Lavers - but until I pop down to Lavers and to BH ( I only work about 15 mins away) it's hard to say. Will pop down to BH tomorrow lunchtime.

Rob - sorry mate I meant I need to pop down to Lavers (& now to BH) at lunchtime. There's no way I'd make it down to Barnsley & back in a hr or so.

Hmmm.......just posted another thread, looking for Oak deals, sorry, didn't notice this thread....

Best I've come up with so far is £25 + vat + free del' on 50 cube from Boddy's

British Hardwoods want £31.50 +vat +£40 delivery on 50 cube.

All prices for QF3 s/e

Chris

Hi Dibs,
I've used all the local firms, and they will all compete on price quite well.

I'm mainly using A.Lavers in Leeds now as there only ten mins from my workshop, they also let you select the boards which is essential in Oak in my opinion especially if you want some decent timber.
This was from Lavers last week-

I like British Hardwoods - their range of European oak is exceptional, and their prices good.

My main supplier though, is Irmass in Trafford Park, Manchester.

Ask for Lee or Dave in the hardwoods department. Good quality and excellent prices on temperates and exotics. I don't know if they deliver over the hills, though.

I get free next day!

Cheers

Cheers Matty - I'm about the same distance from the one in Bfd so will pop in there.

The pictures of the boards you show, is that how they come from Lavers or is that after a bit of machining?

I was happy with the service I received from Garrards Timber in Huddersfield (I collected mine, so no idea about delivery). I was buying American White Oak in boards of 6" x 1.5". (they don't have a website, but are owned by Chambers timber of halifax)

I have also bought European Oak fron British Hardwoods and was very satisfied with the service (they were quite expensive though)

I've so far only used Garrards for American White oak and Tulipwood (superb to paint!) but when I went to collect the Oak they seemed to have a large selection of diferent hardwoods (all PAR from what I could see). I'm a hardwood novice, so couldn't put an accurate name to most of them!

Worth giving them a ring in my opnion.
