    Hardwood Supplies in Scotland

The build centre in Aberdeen sells: Oak, beach, ash, iroko etc in rough sawn lengths. Nothing particulary exotic though. They don't always have large stocks but the timber is not too bad. You have to do all the planing and cutting yourself. Andy

    Tool Problems

I have been making some floating shelves for the wee ones bedroom last weekend. I was using my hollow chisel morticer to create the pocket for the wall fixings. The shelves are made from Beech and oak. The problem I have is that I have managed to break the tips on the hollow chisel. See pic...

    Problems starting up compressor

Have you checked the oil recently? Could be low in oil or no oil, the temperature could be a factor. House warm - Shed cold? Andy

    Timber sources in Scotland?

Gaz You can buy hardwood rough sawn from the build centre in Aberdeen (Causeway End), they don't have the ability to cut and plane the wood though. Usually a good stock of oak and beech - some iroko and many others but not may exotics. For exotics - best go to scottish hardwoods. Andy

    beefing up bas 315

I swithered on whether to buy a new bandsaw or look for a second hand old cast unit. I eventually went for a second hand 352 Startrite. The unit was 3 phase so I changed the motor for a single phase unit. Very impressed, solid as a rock. I think you could weld and brace as much as possible but...

    Mdf Toybox.

To be honest I would probably make it out of pine if you can get some laminated sheets, it would make the joints a bit stronger and as it is to be painted shouldn't make much difference. I'm not a fan of MDF if you have to screw into endgrain. Andy

    Rutlands Clamps

I have quite a few of these clamps and find them ok. Not Bessey but useful. Things to look out for. If you over tighten them the Alu bar tries to open in the middle meaning the clamp part is difficult to get passed on the next job. Not a big problems as a wee squeeze on the vice soon sorts it...

Bosch Fixed Base and Plunge Router?

I'm not sure what the advantages are as well. Anyone care to elaborate? Andy

    Workshop pending!

It was valued at about the 200k mark, can't remember exactly. Cost about 30k for the land and took about 4 days to erect the timber frame - all finished in 8 months. By bland I mean lacking architectural features. Just really a square box. Not really minimalist - just bland Andy

    Workshop pending!

The black house was on the tv recently - was valued as less than they paid to build it. Not to my taste. The inside was as bland as the outside if I remember correctly. Andy

    Competition - CLOSED - Results 9am MONDAY

Hello All, I'd just like to say thanks to all the people who voted for me and thanks for the lovely comments about my daughter. More than one vote is always a good thing. I mentioned to my wife that I wasn't going to win and she said she would buy me whatever was given for first prize. Then...

COMP063 - Pew storage box- Finished

Well the carving didn’t go to plan and luckily when I suggested to the wife what my plan was she kicked it into touch. She thought that it didn’t need any carvings on the hand holds. So here it is – all finished. I have put on one coat of clear wax and will apply a few more over the next couple...

    Requesting design advice

Had a wee go at this before the 1.618 was quoted. Started with 200 and removed 25mm off the height. Andy

    Requesting design advice

Devonwoody, Can you clarify what you mean by depth. I take depth as in how far the drawer extends into the cabinet or the thickness of the drawer front. You probably mean the height of each drawer front reducing from bottom to top Andy

    COMP063 - Competition-curvey storage WIP

Sheesh - very good indeed. Almost like a story board. I don't think I have the ability to produce something like that in 8 days. Thanks for the info on the chisels - looks like a wee trip to the local tool store is required - now I have a shopping list :D A quick question if I may. I found...

    Mounting a mantle piece

Did something similar myself. After putting up some stud work I screwed some flat plate to the back of the oak beam - 25mm wide x 600mm long running vertically. I then screwed the plate to the studding and plastered over the plate. You could screw the plate directly to the wall. Then plaster...

    COMP063 - Competition-curvey storage WIP

Thanks for the comments :D Chris I did put a wee bit of thought into the assembly to try and reduce and problems with opposing grain. The front panel is only glued to the sides and is 10mm short of the floor and 5mm short of the seat. This should allow it to expand and contract without stress...

    COMP063 - Competition-curvey storage WIP

Thanks all for the help with photo resizing. Tony I actually have dust collection but don't use it when I'm planning mode, only thicknessing. I find it too fiddly to attach. It's not long before the chips go on the bonfire. Well as the deadline was looming I got a bit carried away and have made...

    COMP063 - Competition-curvey storage WIP

Well I thought I'd better pull my finger out and post some pics. My wife has been in need of some storage in the kitchen for the wee ones toys and as we seem to spend most of out time in there an extra seat wouldn't go a miss. Here’s the start, a nice fresh piece of oak. Well several lengths...
