What's happened to some of our more illustrious posters?

Am I alone in wondering why Mr Grimsdale is yet again showing the "BANNED" notification on his postings? I realise that just asking this question may result in my suspension but I felt it was high time to ask why? Especially as he is one of our most experienced and knowledgeable posters. Scrit

i need a full set of machines for a workshop 20k budget

1k for tooling? Really? I think you've got a bit of learning to do about tooling costs. What sort of work are you looking to undertake? Without that a budget is pretty difficult to set - as is advice on machinery. In any case I'd have thought anyone setting up a business would include at least...

    Youtube bandsaw

He's a grade A idiot because he's clearly demonstrating a stupid and dangerous technique (which in any case is pretty pointless). And there are other less educated idiots who will no doubt try to emulate him...... That's the thing about the Internet - all views are equal. Even the stupid ones...

A little bit of history. Short rip fences appeared before the turn of the century - the 20th century. Riving knives and crown guards appeared on saws in the UK following the 1925 Board of Trade directive with retrofitting being mandated in trade premises in the 1930s (I believe). t is no bad...

    glue and cold weather

I'm only trying to help with the technical bits - the marraige guidanve I leave to others....... BTW it is possible to rig-up a warmer box using a pendant light fitting, lightbulb and insulated biscuit tin to keep stuff from freezing in the winter. Greenhouse heaters in the bottoms of cupboards...

EZ Smart Guide / Festool Guide. Are there any others?

There's the rub! Yes, or at least I've read about it, but Dino is a good salesman and committed to his product and I, in common with many others, find some of his assertions overblown when it comes to accuracy and repeatability. Panel saws work on the basis that your first two cuts, at right...

    glue and cold weather

Yes. PVA glues generally have an open time of 5 minutes to 20 minutes, a set time in the order of 1 to 6 hours, but are normally only fully cured after 24 hours - all at a nominal 20° Centigrade. Any glue containing water (and PVA, aliphatic resins, etc are water-based) will need to be kept...

Really? So you've used a saw for 4 years, presumably without ever bothering to read anything useful about safety or have a training session - and survived. So what! There are many recorded instances of even experienced woodworkers who've used a rip saw sans riving knife, etc without incident all...

    Moral Dilemma

I feel she has a bit of a cheek! If you are making nosie 7 days a week, starting before 9am or finishing after 5pm then she may well (only may) have a point, but as others have said had you employed tradesmen they would have probably told her politely or otherwise where to go and continued...

EZ Smart Guide / Festool Guide. Are there any others?

I couldn't agree with you more, Paul. A similar thing can be said for blades, where thickness of blade most certainly affects the quality of cut in terms of the amount of "wow and flutter" the blade suffers In my personal experience this is not the case. Most reasonable tradesmen buy the best...

    Pear Veneered MDF

Yep - I used to use oak, steamed beech, whire beech and maple quite a lot. Generally it's a trade product so you need to find a trade supplier such as Montague L. Meyer, Silvermann, Lawcris, etc Scrit

    Driving gripes....?

My dad told me "It's not you you've got to worry about, it's all the other idiots on the road.......". Is that even more cynical, or just plain truthful? In addition to some of the other peeves mentioned I was reminded just this morning of another one of mine - idiots from towns who don't...

Ikea kitchens - any good? And fitting your own kitchen tips?

The down side is that there's little or no room to manouver if you need to scribe heavily into old/very uneven walls Agreed. If you buy an Ikea kitchen a lot of standard slot-ins just won't fit - and the other point is that reskinning by replacing doors in the future is also out because the...
