    Wax for sealing end grain

That sound like the wax emulsion I use to use, "Mobilicer C". I think you can still get it but you have to purchase it in large quantities now.

    Exploring texturing: Critiques welcome

Bob Nice work. For some reason they remind me of the Mary Rose bowls done by Robin Wood. I think they work. The one for the continuation of the flow of the curve through the textured ring. And the other ... I can't quite put my finger on it ... maybe it's the slight curve outwards just below...

    Critique Etiquette

Chas I couldn't agree more. We all tend to work in isolation and we can get very involved in a piece of work with almost a blinkered view of it based on an initial idea. It's good to step back and get other view points. It can lead to options or directions in your work you may never have...

    Airbrush Advice required

Gary You can get a cheap one from Axminster. http://www.axminster.co.uk/product.asp?pf_id=21135&name=airbrush&user_search=1&sfile=1&jump=0 This is similar to the one I started out with. It got me hooked so I treated myself to a professional double action one. You may also find this link...

    Critique required-piece No 2.

Paul A nice looking piece and it appears to be well finished. The green flecks you referred to are characteristic of sycamore as the timber starts to deteriorate. At a later stage these turn into those dirty grey streaks you see in weathered sycamore. As to the form I would have liked to have...

Beech root No 2: Critique welcome

Pete It's difficult with a piece of timber like this of knowing where to start and often you just don't know what to expect inside it. It might have been better just carving the bowl form similar to Paul(?) Caton's work (isn't hind sight a wonderful thing  ). That way you can create the...

saying hello and learning the basics

Hi Milkjam Welcome to the forum. Eli is a well respected turner worldwide and produces some wonderful work. You may find his design of tools a little too specialist compared to traditional turning tools - most of his tools have either a convex bevel or double bevels which he designed with the...

    Winge

Pete I looked again at your pieces you put up for critique after seeing your comments here and I'd have to agree with Chas regarding showing a few more views from different angles. Whenever I'm looking at a piece of work it's the form/shape I'm looking for first and then the use of timber etc...

    It's here.

Hi Paul Congratulations on the new lathe :D I noticed that you've wall mounted the control box. Does it have a remote magnetic back control as well because if not you may find it's a bit too far away if you need to stop the lathe quickly. You could consider wiring in a foot switch or mounting...

Hardwood forests (sorry if its in the wrong forum section)

I know in Wales there is an organization called Coed Cymru who advise on woodland management. They have woodland officers with every unitary authority and have been very successful at getting woodlands managed well after their demise in the mid 20th century. When living in Wales when every I...
