    One-*** efficacy questions

Charnwood W880 Lathe - are theya good 'step up from beginner' lathe

The information came from a Vicmarc agent who knows Vic (owner of Vicmarc). It's highly unlikely any manufacturer will disclose publicly how they make their product and where they source their materials from.

Charnwood W880 Lathe - are theya good 'step up from beginner' lathe

I believe Vicmarc have been getting their lathes cast in China for a number of years now.

    One-*** efficacy questions

I've followed this thread with interest along with those other ones that have since been locked and/or removed to another place. The one thing that's baffled me is why anyone hasn’t tapped into this wealth of knowledge and expertise that has been posted here such as the scientific community, the...

I blame YouTube, how many more Americanisms are we going to have to suffer ?

Back around 2003 they did but think it has now lapsed.

Record CL3 play on headstock .. I think

Record no longer use the tapered plain bearing having gone over to sealed for life bearings. The only other lathe I'm aware of that still uses a plain bearing is the VB36. The sealed for life bearings are used on all other lathes.

    Ash goblet hollowing

You can tell how you are cutting i.e. on side or end of the wood fibres by what comes off the tool - long shavings show you are cutting on the side of the fibres, dust shows you are cutting the ends of the fibres.

    Ash goblet hollowing

A phase I hate because one doesn't cut the end of the grain but rather the side.

    Ash goblet hollowing

You’re getting a lot of conflicting comments so I’ll have a go and confuse you more :D First thing you always do before doing any cut is Check what the grain direction is Pick the appropriate tool for the job Ensure the tool has an appropriate profile/grind for the job In your case you are...

    Warping of workpiece

Yes. It's what I referred to previously Another thing to bear in mind is that wood never stops moving. Simplest example a wooden front doors; loose fit in summer, tight fit in winter.

    Warping of workpiece

IMHO what you are experiencing is to be expected being a combination of factors. One being the wood acclimatizing to the environment it is in and the other being the release of the stresses and tensions in the wood fibers as you cut through them. The change of shape from round to elliptical is...

    Vaccine Passports (domestic).

Unless I am misunderstanding some of the recent posts, having the vaccine does not make one safe. The full course of vaccination reduces a person's chance of becoming seriously ill from Covid-19. The idea of it making a person safe is more than likely something decided on social media and passed...

    Vaccine Passports (domestic).

Having just spent some time talking with a friend in the US where the subject of healthcare there came up I can only conclude you have a very blinkered viewpoint; one might even say privileged.

Scrapers - why not go negative

Totally agree with everything Paul says except one thing :) - they are very useful for small boxes because there isn't room to lift the handle and used by the majority of well known box makers worldwide When negative rake scrapers first appeared in the woodturning world it took me a while to...

Is it practical to turn wood between centres with a driving dog?

Axminster and OneWay do matching rings on the drive and revolving centre for just that purpose. Matched Pair of Ring Centres

    Polishing textured wood.

A variation on the brush method which I was shown years ago by a carver and used on relief carvings is to have the brush in a hand drill to speed up polishing. So something like this small round brush with the handle length reduced in length, screw put in end of handle and head cut off then...

    Gouge buying question

Bear in mind the gouge you originally posted is a Henry Taylor HS1 which has a different flute profile to most other bowl gouges and is known as a superflute ... think the design was created by Peter Child. Different flute profiles will create different cutting edge profiles even if the same...
