    Advice for cabinet making

For a painted finish I use MR MDF: 18mm for the carcasses, 22mm for the door rails and stiles, 6mm or 9mm for the panel, depending on the size of the door. Using Ply for a painted carcass is just making work for yourself IHMO. Edited to add: All wood dust should be treated as hazardous...

Struggling to cut 35mm hinge holes in MR MDF - Advice please

Hi & welcome. MR MDF is a much better quality board for not much more money, so it shouldn't be a problem with the material; I'd agree that it sounds more like a bunt bit. I make a *lot* of doors from MR MDF and I've always bought relatively cheap cutters e.g. Faithful (about £8 apiece from...

    New Web site help. please

Yes, it's an all-in-one type of deal with hosting and CMS / customisable templates included, costs about £100/year - http://www.squarespace.com . I used to do my own sites and host them individually back when it was just simple HTML, but it stopped being 'fun' long ago and now I just want...

    New Web site help. please

Thanks! It's a SquareSpace site - one of their templates with the design changed and my own content added. I have a separate portfolio site which is essentially just pictures of recent work, and can be easily change to more closely target what I want to show a potential customer. @ MikeS. We're...

    Portable Telephone Advice

Don't think so - I was using 4.1 and 4.4 I think - but iCloud is standard IMAP and SMTP email so setting it up was just a question of tracking down the server names/addresses and mucking about with port Nos. - like we used to do in the old days, lol! I don't disagree with the overall sentiment...

    Portable Telephone Advice

No, you can set up iCloud email on an Android device manually - had mine synching with the Moto E and a Galaxy Note, no problems with either device. If the OP doesn't already have one they'll need a Gmail address for an Android phone, of course... Pete

    Portable Telephone Advice

Motorola Moto E, £50 from Tesco or about £70 unlocked from Amazon. Be aware this is for last-year's 3G model - there's a newer one available for about £100 if you need & can access the 4G networks. I have one as a family back up phone, and have bought a couple as gifts - simple enough for my...

    New Web site help. please

I've always based my sites around the five 'W's of Journalism - Who, What, When, Where and Why - substituting 'How much' for the 'when'. Keep the home page simple so it loads easily, and link to the other pages with more detail. Personally I use simple graphics on the landing page as these will...

End of sheet cutting with tracksaw

Butt together a couple of the100mm strips you've already cut to provide support - tape them all together if you're worried about them moving. Festool's neoprene strips are very grippy, just FYI, but rail clamps are always good to have. HTH Pete

    Kitting out my workshop

Just to add: Matthias Wandel on Youtube builds a good sturdy workbench from 4x2s and an old door, using just a circular saw and a corded drill - might be worth a look. HTH Pete

    Web site Shop

Just to add, if you're determined to DIY then all-in-one providers like squarespace.com and weebly.com could be worth a look - you get responsive design and integrated e-commerce as standard, for example, and they handle all the compliance requirements wrt e-commerce. Pete

    MFT Style Top

I routed out a 9mm deep channel on my MFT and used a sacrificial strip of MDF to bring it up to level; full support under the cut, and easily replaceable. Worth making the channel/strip a bit deeper IMHO if you ever plan to make bevel cuts, as the bevel 'over-cut' is always a bit deeper. HTH Pete

    Is 9mm MDF 9mm?

Not sure where you're getting the 8.5mm from - Wealden do an 8mm, 9.5mm and 10mm groover in the standard range, or 8mm and 10mm in the heavy duty range; if the 'standard' is deep enough for what you need I'd go for the 9.5mm personally. FWIW I use a 6.4mm (1/4") HD Groover for 6mm panels, and...

    Mobile phone advice sought.

A hard reset will often sort out software-related glitches. Is your volume issue phone.app related, or just generally quiet i.e. is it acceptable if you play e.g. music through the speaker, or is it different if you take a hands-free call?

    Mobile phone advice sought.

Well, changing the phone is probably cheaper than changing the car - like changing the tie, rather than the suit ;) Out of interest, have you tried a 'hard' reset of the iPhone? This doesn't delete any data, just forces the iPhone to quit and restart in the same way that hitting Ctrl/Alt/del...

    Decent spirit level recommendations?

Bought the Bosch digital level years ago and it's excellent - easy to calibrate and robust - though it also has a non-adjustable vial, which seems silly. Great piece of kit though - my 'one true level' to rule them all ;) Pete

    i Mac help

That's why I wondered if the problem persists with Chrome. Otherwise my money would be on RAM > kernel panick; 3Gb is pretty light even just for browsing these days, though it's what I have in mine. Pete

    i Mac help

More questions than answers - pretty much the only 'beach-ball' I see these days is on a 2009-era iMac I use as a home server, and then only on wake-up when it's sluggish for a bit, but... Is it an older machine - short of RAM maybe, or using a Hard Drive rather than SSD? Does it happen if you...

    Flooring chipboard

Good news about the access, and no, nobody needs to be making work for themselves - especially if it's a favour for a mate! Like BR says above, bang a few boards down and see; in case it isn't clear, you need to be staggering the boards so the short T&G ends are supported by the boards above and...

    Flooring chipboard

Exactly! If a manufacturer recommends putting noggins in to support their T&G edges then they're either displaying a marked lack of faith in their product, or indulging in a level of @rse-covering that would have me avoiding that manufacturer. There are times when noggins are needed - unusually...
