i Mac help

When I go on to you tube or my facebook page I can bring up one or maybe two items up and then when I click on something else I get the little coloured wheel appear, as though something is loading, and it stays like this all the time. I obviously cannot click on anything else and the only way out is to quit Safari and then the same thing happens again. Does anyone have any idea how I can rectify this. many thanks in advance.

More questions than answers - pretty much the only 'beach-ball' I see these days is on a 2009-era iMac I use as a home server, and then only on wake-up when it's sluggish for a bit, but...

Is it an older machine - short of RAM maybe, or using a Hard Drive rather than SSD? Does it happen if you use another browser e.g. Chrome? Is the OS/Safari up to date? Does it still happen if you log yourself out and back in again? Is it better / worse / the same after a restart? Does Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > Safari) show anything amiss? Some dynamic content on current websites is incredibly complex - do you have similar problems visiting any other sites?

If you go to the  menu (top left) then 'About This Mac' you'll get the specs of your machine.

Hi Pete. My i Mac is a 2008 model. It has a 2.4GHz core 2 duo and has 3gb of ram. Yes, it still happens when I log in and out. It's fine in things like i player or if I go to BBC news, I can flick through several items no problem at all.

Another little problem, and I don't know if it is related, now and again, say every few weeks everything on the screen freezes. I cannot open anything. If I am in work I can continue writing. The only way out is to turn off the power supply and then re-boot. I am hoping to get a new mini i Mac soon with a seperate monitor but in the mean time I would like to get this problem fixed so I can eventually give the i Mac to my daughter.

We have an iMac of the same age and I don't see this problem. My first thought is how much free space do you have on your hard drive? I've seen this problem before on PC's with little free space.

I have got 92gb of free space left.

"They", whoever they were :lol: used to say you should have at least 10% of the hard drive empty. So, if your HD is 500 GB that should be ok, if it's a 1TB drive it could be part of your problem?

You could use Onyx to give it a bit of a springclean.

When was the last time you reloaded the OS? I do this from time to time and then restore the data.

That's why I wondered if the problem persists with Chrome. Otherwise my money would be on RAM > kernel panick; 3Gb is pretty light even just for browsing these days, though it's what I have in mine.

A couple more questions? What OS are you using and how big is the HDD?

Have you tried another browser? I have a late 2009 iMac and the same MacBook Pro, both running OS X 10.9 Mavericks and the iMac has the full 8 gig of memory. That's a fairly cheap upgrade and pays BIG dividends! The thing about not having much memory is that the HDD has to do a load of transferring the files you are using to the remaing memory and compared to the solid state memory it is SLOW!. The more memory, the less file transfer needed to work = faster. Hvave a look at http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en they will tell you what you need to upgrade, if th's what you want/need and they are good!

Something else that can slow it is, have you emptied the trash? That can buils up very quickly and if you don't have much room on your HDD it will slow things a lot.

The hard drive is 320gb SATA disk and the operating system is OS X Yosemite.

If you have a look here http://macs.about.com/od/OS-X-Yosemite/ ... ements.htm it says absolute minimum is 2 gig but it recommends a min of 4 gig to run Yosemite.

If you get a couple of 4 gig memory cards from crucial that would probably give you an almost new machine?? If you go to this site http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en it will give you the stuff you need, if you decided to jump that way, and the price. The only connection I have with them is as a very satisfied customer wot has used them for a number of years..

My appologies. I have just had a look at the max config for your model and it's just 4 gig, 2 X 2 gig mem cards. But? I have not used these folk so no idea what they are like??
