How well does a Collet reducer work?

I’ve used one for years, works just fine Aidan

    Cutting Steel with Circular Saw

It’s in the tooth geometry, the thing with a mitre saw is the blade may slow down and stop but it’s unlikely to kick the workpiece back at you or worse the entire saw, however a handheld circular saw might well do that, so I’d not go for it myself. A reciprocating saw with a metal cutting...

    Drill bits

Cobalt steel drills are lovely and hard, but that makes them more brittle. I’d go for 7mm HSS jobber drills, I’ve generally found it better to use and throw bits and they will likely be more common (and cheaper) than a fraction smaller. Aidan

    Rutlands tools

It might sound terrible but have you tried running a file over a tooth of that ratchet surface? I’d be interested to know how hard that bit is, that’s the bit that’ll take the most wear and making that hard is the enemy of the rest of the process to make that part, so it’s a real trade off and...

    Rutlands tools

Well we are totally off topic now, but maybe consider the irony of expressing your opinion about the rights and wrongs of protecting the rights of others being able to express an opinion when in some places they can’t. It might amuse you as much as it amuses me By the way, you have no right to...

    Table saw fence

You can use aluminium extrusion, it can be relatively cheap, if you know the right fabricators it can be free offcuts Aidan

Does cheap dust extraction hose exist?

I have that same hose, no problems with it but it’s not made for mobile applications, if you want hose that’s made for dragging over the floor etc you need something far heavier and much more expensive. For plugging into machines and handling it’s done fine for the last couple of years for me...

Does cheap dust extraction hose exist?

What did you buy? I’ve had their stuff and it’s fine, can you post a picture? Aidan

    Books for small box projects

All books are in metric, some use blocks of 25.4mm called inches, that’s the only difference. Whilst it was the only way in the past to buy books, I can’t think of any I’ve seen in recent years that aren’t mostly covered by online materials (albeit in a higher entropy form). For inspiration...

    blum drawer issues

You’ve got to have some drop, it’s a question of magnitudes Aidan

    Rutlands tools

Oh it’s hilarious, like a vegan in leather shoes or an animal rights activist who uses medicine Aidan

    blum drawer issues

Should you not expect the drawer to be lower at the front than back when open? I have a set on a heavy cutlery drawer and the same thing happens, but then it’s a cantilever, to avoid this they would have to be angled upwards to compensate for the downwards surely? Aidan

    Trimming foil faced door

You can cut it and then lip with matching hardwood and it’s fine, if it’s chipboard, not so easy if it’s cardboard waffle filled hardboard Aidan

I have an imposter in my elm pile!

Looks like cedar to me, if it is then it’s ideal for an outdoor bench Aidan

    Workshop/tool insurance

If it’s your house then just make sure what’s on your policy and include the value. I always pose the question “so if I put all my belongings in the garage and they were stolen, it would be covered right?”, if the answer’s “only up to £500” or similar, use another provider business will be...

    Woodrat or Router Table?

I’ve had both, I now have a good router table. I’d not say they are comparable really Aidan

    sliding mitersaw confusion

Funny! I’ve not had a conversation like that in years, but I do remember a technician asking “are you telling me how to do my job?”, to which I could only be honest... “yes!” As for the original question, the static behaviour of a saw might all be for nothing by the time there’s the load of the...

    Screws in guitar body

You want to drill a hole that is the size of the shank of the screw (the solid bit in the middle), but smaller than the threads, so they bite into the wood, but the shank doesn’t act as a wedge to split the wood apart. If it looks too small, open it up Aidan

    Kirsty’s homemade Christmas

It’s just been on again, I wouldn’t normally watch such things but... wow, what a shocker of a piece. Aidan

    Jessem stock roller safety

I think many products with a US origin presume people have done a number of daft to things, like removed the riving knife, not used a sub-fence, no crown guard etc... they have a different attitude to safety to put it mildly. There may not be that many people using th I can see the Jessem...
