Woodworking tool shops in or near Edinburgh

Murrays Tools 83 Morrison St. They do have a website - www.murraystools.com - but it doesn't work. Don't think they carry much stock of 'quality' wood working tools but as said it is a bit of an Alladin's Cave. I don't think there is anywhere else - Andy Mcilwaine is out at Sighthill for saw...

Advice on plasterboarding a ceiling please

I think at one stage it was two rooms (this is a 200yr old cottage) and there's an inverted ridge that runs down the centre which is over an inch deep, and is badly cracked. Rob

Advice on plasterboarding a ceiling please

Useful stuff Roger - thanks as I'm under the thumb at the moment to re-do our bedroom ceiling. I've two questions - Roger; what's the plasterboard lifter? Is it basically a large scissor jack? I put up several 8 * 4 sheets onto my workshop ceiling single handed using a crude range of boxes...

Aligning the pith in hollow forms

Just out of interest has any one tried the Ron Kent soak in detergent treatment to see if this has an effect on inhibiting pith splitting. Rob

    Tulip wood

London Plane's alternative name is Lace Wood - it doesn't have tulip shaped flowers which I suspect all 'Tulip Woods' do. On that basis all magnolias could be tulip trees' as well - but then Liriodendron is in the family Magnoliacea - so it is a magnolia, and not a poplar though mistakenly...

    phase converter

Russ - I can't remember if Bob points it out in his monograph, but in general it seems that an 'inverter' tends to mean one of the electronic boxes that are committed to one machine - wood turning lathe, etc and are particularly good at giving variable speed. In general the less expensive ones...

    Making a Router Tale

I've got a home made table and I deliberately offset the router to the front for easy use and then the whole lot can be turned round so that I've a wider area if machining a wider board. The fence is just held down with male threaded hand knobs into nut inserts in the table top - slots...

Faceplate - source for unusual thread

I love my Wadkins lathe, but it does have the bugbear that the nose thread is 1 3/8" UNC. which seems to be unique to this machine. Has anyone got any idea who would stock faceplates to fit this - I'm looking for the smaller size - 4" to 6". Rob

    new toy.

Yes, get Keith Rowleys's book - and read all of it !! I've been turning for 2 years now and got ticked off at the club the other day for using a roughing gouge to start of bowl (not safe as the roughing gouge has a small tang into the handle and likely therefore to break with large diameter...

Help - bandsaw on the fritz

Damian I actually didn't get to a burnt out coil so your award of a star isn't quite deserved !! As is the way of these things you tend to think up all sorts of more complex scenarios, but not having met a coil failure before it wasn't one I thought of. But I will remember it as a failure option...

    Make your own band saw

I climb mountains - what's the point ? The sense of satisfaction ! "I wonder if I can - let's try and see". I think that that sense of adventure and exploration exists more in some of us than others. I put the link up as the guy has a number of other projects on his site which I thought...

Karl I stumbled across this guys site sometime back and he's got a home made one in wood - might be a nice project. http://woodgears.ca/mobile_base/table_saw.html Rob

Oh dear and ooppss ! guess who was showing an even more of a beginner than I how to use a roughing gouge at the turning club this very afternoon ..... to start off a bowl blank !!!  I will have to look this guy out and apply correction ! Thanks for that. Rob

    Workshop CU setup

I rebuilt my saw bench with a 2.1kW motor - care of a skip !! I did have to adjust the electronic starter timings and in due course I did transfer it to a dedicated 16A circuit but it only took the 13A fuse out occasionally before I changed it over. The point is that 1500W motors are used in...

Help - bandsaw on the fritz

Yep, a photo would be a major help. Another option I've thought of is the armature has moved out enough to clear the motor contacts before jamming, but the coil hold-in contact has not been cleared, hence the hum. The jam is sufficiently tight that the coil cannot overcome it and pull the...

Help - bandsaw on the fritz

OK guys - let's think this one through. Two puzzling bits of evidence - and a picture of the control box would help. 1 There's a slight buzz (hum I take it) when the power (see my query on this further on) is switched on - Damian won't be aware if that is normal or not, but it does suggest...

    Garage workshop door

Hi guys, particularly those with up and over doors. WARNING if these are your only route of access - my father died when something went on fire in his workshop and he couldn't get the door up to get out ! He had no other exit! I know it's potentially a waste of wall space but I built my...

    CU's

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but surely a split board is essential in a workshop in order to make sure the lighting stays on when something on the power circuit trips the system. An arguable point perhaps but with so many power tools around, the rcd is even more likely to trip in a workshop...
