    First bandsaw: advice appreciated

I've been a t/s man all my life and recently invested in a lower quality machine than the Startrite, but I'm not going to be cutting anything demanding as you are, so it is adequate (and less expensive!) One thing that I did was to take the collective's recommendation and bought Steve Maskery's...

    cracked opportunity

Mark - not only is the finished item a pleasure to the eye, but many thanks for the WIP photos. On a one off piece like this, I'm sure most of us would get carried away with the artistic effort and never think about fishing out the camera. I'm sure the gognoscenti here will all know how the...

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Thanks for that point, Bob - it's not one that I'd thought of. I do suspect that you have a cynical outlook on manufacturers   , but of course that is fully justified...... and 'credibility' is what they don't necessarily have. Rob

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Graeme Many thanks for your feedback. I'm not sure if I got to the correct diagnosis first but it's nice for once to be able to assist in helping someone else with a problem. I hope Bob Minchin (9fingers) is watching this thread as well as the problem you have met will certainly not be unique...

Blister has a few questions , and something to ask

That is not realistic - I won a lot of wood off Ebay at a price that really was a bargain; I put in a price that was way below it's market value not expecting to win; but there's more material than I want, so I'm going to sell it on. Does that count as trading and for profit ? OK not a...

Blister has a few questions , and something to ask

I cannot now remember the full details - was it a For Sale thread or something else - but I did get involved with Blister over some careless wording in a thread about a year ago, and I was struck by his demand to see things his way. My personal feeling is that he is being too sensitive and...

small oval maple box with lid

Do we not notice anything in your posting, John, which suggests you are going along for duty alone ? Sounds an impressive bash - enjoy. On the other hand it does really start define just quite how old you are - I'm impressed. Late 80's - or is that extending the definition of "combatant...

    Router table insert

Many thanks Dibs - the mud is just that bit clearer; possibly clear enough to proceed with a decision over the weekend. Cheers and thanks for saving me from a long wade! Rob

    Router table insert

Hi Dibs - maybe two more sets yet; myself and a friend. But I'm going to have to read through the 17 pages to understand what the difference is between Al and Steel, and why one would want to mix the materials - and actually what the rings are for (don't have any on my present table!) If...

small oval maple box with lid

Hi Ad Thanks for the clearer picture - I'm not sure I'm much clearer though. I'm passing it to a friend for another mind on it - he's into metalworking in a big way with wood turning a side interest, and is possibly better at understanding drawings than I. I think I see how it works - the box...

Screw holes in bottom of bowl

Chas - if the glueing is done the way I do it with the heat gun, then "a few dots" seems to be quite adequate. I suppose some objective testing could be carried out but I suspect that there are perhaps just too many variables to make any rules, but certainly the pre-heating of the base block...

small oval maple box with lid

Ad Like John I'm intrigued how this is done. I guess the chucking is a waste block as you've talked about doing that before, but I went back through your posts (not all 7 pages I will admit) and did find one on oval turning, with a machine drawing of the mechanism you use, but the resolution...

Screw holes in bottom of bowl

Pick up this thread when looking for something else. By 'hot glue' I think we are all talking about wax stick glue, rather than the traditional brown glue - which could of course be used too but having a melt pot and all that is not really realistic. I don't know if the more expensive guns...

Deep rimmed shallow bowl (nervous to say) - "for critiq

I appreciate I'm moving slightly sideways on this critique, and I hope Skeetoids won't object, but bowls are difficult to photograph and some comments on doing so would be appreciated. I could well guess from my own attempts as an equal beginner that quite a number of shots were taken of this...

    Router table insert

I'm sorry if this seems a lazy question now but what's the price like ? I imagine it's buried somewhere in the 17 pages !! :( Rob

3 phase help required (pretty please)

Many thanks to you also Mark, for your feedback. This has been an education for all of us who have given our opinions (I did type 'advise' but realised that should come from someone who is fully knowledgeable, and I'm pretty sure I don't qualify!). We are all the wiser from your trials and...

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Office girls - either you are *very* old, Roy, or you worked in a different part of the electronics industry from me. All the members of the female species I came across were software programmers and would have taken considerable offence I suspect if lined up like that. Rob

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Roy I tend to agree with your opt out. I now see my working career as something like my school one - something I want to forget. By the way I want to challenge your subscript - "Growing old is obligatory" - true physically, mentally we are all trying to remain young, but the 'wise' part is...

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Graeme - as I went off to go to bed immediately after posting that idea about the timer relay, your suggestion of course came to mind. Going back to the P/T that my brother had, that had to be hand switched over, so if you can locate the appropriate wires, then I would suggest a manual switch...

    Looking for some help....Motor woes

Roy, I was surprised when I ran into this problem with my TS refurbishment as I would have thought a 3hp motor would have run it up pretty fast - it was a 0.75 hp previously. I can't remember now - it will be a log book somewhere - what timing I did have to re-set it to but it was quite a bit...
