    Advice on taking Photo's

This might be taken the wrong way... I hope not... but I suggest you read this link from Ken Rockwell. Anyone who thinks they will take better pictures by upgrading their camera is misguided. Yes, you may need Photoshop Elements (or even the full-on package if you want to turn pro) to tweak your...

workshop (garage) lighting - benefits of 'daylight' tubes?

I very recently bought 4 "daylight" strip lights and the difference is remarkable. They give a fantastic white/blue-white light that is far easier on the eyes. I would recommend switching anywhere you use strip lights for working. I used Philips de luxe 58W 965, but Osram also have 965 quality...

    Problems with recessed lights

I have had similar problems in the past and my experience is that the problem can nearly always be traced back to the wires. In my case the heat generated by the low voltage halogen spots had accelerated the oxidisation of the copper inside the cables. You can tell by pulling out a length from...

Making a window with basic tools (lots of pics)

That's a bit of an urban myth actually. Modern paint technology is far better than it was, so much better that the integrity of the finish is vital to the health of the timber. Any damage to the paint layer will accelerate water absorption at that point as moisture cannot escape anywhere else...

    Solid Kitchen door job

Wow, Scrit, I'm surprised to see you recommending this guys router table. Have you watched his demo video? It scares the hell out of me, with the bit so exposed and his hands passing right over the top... not a guard or featherboard in sight... MLCS Table

Why the Rip-fence is on the right of the blade

This is totally OT but, ironically, you have answered your own question on this point! Statistically, driving on the left IS safer than driving on the right. Due in part to "righthandidness" but also due to the use of the "give way to the right" law which applies equally to both LHD and RHD...

Plaster board or solid Plaster for walls?

I've recently done quite a bit of rebuilding involving plasterboard walls and ceilings. I even had a go at plastering as well. Which after flattening a few "hills" wasn't that bad. Whether you decide to re-plaster or use a false wall with plasterboard is really down to the state of the wall and...

    sharpening planer blades in situ?

Ahh, now I understand what that Axminster thingy is! I still think the David Charlesworth/John Bullar method is an easier and more controllable method of honing, but each to their own. :) I had forgotten Mr C had written about this as well. His explanation in Book 1 is very clear with...

    sharpening planer blades in situ?

I can see a problem with the Axminster special posted by cumbrian. It will be difficult to hone the bevel at the same angle along the full length of the blade as you have to hand hold it and run it down the edge without any support. A simpler, and cheaper, flat rectangular stone can be run...

    sharpening planer blades in situ?

Yep it is possible. The easiest thing for me to do is simply quote John Bullar from F&C: You can't do this too often though before the blades need a regrinding and keep the secondary bevel narrow to avoid burnishing.

    Festool guide rails

I don't live in the real world, I live in Holland! I don't think any "faffing" is involved though, it takes about five seconds to spray a little PTFE and then wipe it down the guide rail. It does actually help. Try it!

    Festool guide rails

I spray my guide rails with Teflon (PTFE) spray. Works a treat. Doesn't really get gunged up either. You just need to wipe the sawdust off with a tissue every now and again. It really helps the saw slide along nice and smooth without binding.

    Another question cabinetmaker or joiner

A little etymological digression for anyone interested in all things "olde"... The word "Ye" as seen in "Ye olde book shoppe" for example, came about purely by accident. It is in fact a mistranslation (or mispronunciation) of the word "THE". Old English used to use several different letters...

Extreme Birdhouses ( The Wellington Hotel )

Great pictures of some of your paying guests! It is good to see that they seem to get on so well, sparrows shouldn't have any problems, though. Other birds need anything up to about 1 km² between nest sites to ovoid territorial punch-ups occurring. Great job :D

Extreme Birdhouses ( The Wellington Hotel )

Very nice work... I think ;) Can't help but say I think your nuts though! In a nice way, obviously! On a more serious note bird houses should normally not be placed near to each other as it may cause fighting and they may end up killing each other. Literally. Only a few species actually enjoy...
