    Black or Ebony Stringing?

The price reflects the fact that the black lines are not ebony. They are dyed (not sure what species) and you get the consistency of colour which you won't always get with ebony. Brian

    Hazel - Coppicing

Hi Jeff English hazel is Corylus avallana. There is some info on it (and other British natives) here. Brian

    Walnut log

If it's worth money why hasn't he had it converted - easy to hire someone with a Woodmizer. I'd be a bit suspicious about how or why it died and until it's been cut it's a lottery? Brian

'New' Honduras Pitch pine, opposed to 'reclaimed'

Not sure there is a problem with supply? - probably more an issue with quality available today ? (perceived or real) Brian

    Heat loss calculations

Roger I haven't done these calculations for many years now but I think you are talking about the air exchange factor which, given suitable ventilation, will be about two per hour(?) - normal ventilation plus air currents within the building (opening/closing doors etc). The air you warm up will...

    smelly timber identification

As Russel said it could be Ekki (Lophira alata) which does have an unpleasant smell when freshly cut but it does wear off. You could be particularly sensitive to it as well? Brian

    timber chart

Hi speed Spalted timber is 'decorative' feature found in wood such as beech and sycamore which shows up as a random series of fine black lines. It is caused by a fungal infection in the wood and the lines are actually zones of demarcation between competing fungi. Haven't got any pictures but...

    timber chart

Bodrighy; you're thinking of Parana pine which isn't a true pine (Pinus spp) but a member of the monkey puzzle genus (Araucaria spp). [I seem to recall it's the name of the region of S Am it originates from rather than it's similarity to pine?] If you are looking for information on wood (plant)...

Late night for you tonight fellers.

He started off with a good site but lately he seems to be making videos at the behest of his paymasters which has spoiled it for me. I'm not interested in watching his commercials anymore. Am I being too cynical? Brian

Getting Perfect Edges with a Jointer

When you set the knives they want to be fractionally (thous of an inch) higher than the outfeed table, not in line with it. If you place a straightedge on the outfeed table and turn the cutter block the knives should just pick up the straightedge and move it forward a few millimetres. You may...

'New' Honduras Pitch pine, opposed to 'reclaimed'

Hi Joe Pitch pine (Pinus palustris) and Honduran Pitch pine (Pinus caribaea) are different species but should look similar to a point - the new wood will always look lighter initially and there will always be a bit of variation, even from boards from the same tree. Are you sure about what the...

    Small hinges

Hi Steve If you just want small brass butts then try Screwfix (they may have a local trade counter as well). If you want something more specialised try Isaac Lords or just google for 'hinges'? If you find a reasonably priced supply of Brusso hinges let me know! Brian

    Wooden hinges

Why not try making a jig by epoxying a piece of hollow tube to something to act as a reference for alignment of the drill bit - something along the lines of a pocket-hole jig - no need for the drill press then? Brian

Planer Table Set Up, What's Right?

I use a Woodstar, which definitely doesn't have parallel infeed/outfeed tables, but nevertheless still planes wood flat - but only if set-up properly. I was experiencing similar problems a while back and after much meddling I discovered the knives were fractionally lower than they should have...
