Bodrighy; you're thinking of Parana pine which isn't a true pine (Pinus spp) but a member of the monkey puzzle genus (Araucaria spp). [I seem to recall it's the name of the region of S Am it originates from rather than it's similarity to pine?]

If you are looking for information on wood (plant) irritants/toxicity then BoDD is the best source for literature but you will have to know a little taxonomy which is where this site will come in handy if all you know is the common name of a timber.

Hi speed

Spalted timber is 'decorative' feature found in wood such as beech and sycamore which shows up as a random series of fine black lines. It is caused by a fungal infection in the wood and the lines are actually zones of demarcation between competing fungi. Haven't got any pictures but google it.

hi again

can i be a bit thick and ask waht spalted timber is?

To go with bjm's description, here's a picture of some spalted European beech. I'm not fully convinced by the bit about competing fungi being the primary cause of colour changes. My understanding from my studies of the subject is that the changes and demarcation zones are due more to the level of infection and stage of rot throughout the wood. Slainte.

I have a catalogue from John Boddy Timber in Yorkshire. There are loads of pictures of timber and some information about each. Maybe worth a call or email.

Bob

There is a downloadable version Here if you can stand the 47mb or so download.

Have a read of this to explain spalting [but apply typical wiki scepticism!].

Interesting and useful link Brian. It adds to the research and the paper I'm working on. As you say, it's always a good idea to retain some scepticism when it comes to Wikipedia, ie, verify the information elsewhere before you use it. Slainte.
