    Keeping Warm!

I have one and wouldn't be with out it.... All the offcuts go in - and the mistakes :? Mine doesn't burn sawdust because sawdust burners take up more floor space, but a sawdust burner is the way to go if you have room. Check out this http://www.workshopstoves.co.uk/ Cheers, Marcus

Veritas/LV Large or Medium Shoulder plane? Which one to buy?

I have both medium and large veritas shoulder planes and hardly ever use the large. The medium is, for me, much easier to use accurately because it is less unwieldy. I have biggish hands and find it comfortable to hold and use. I would suggest that unless you are doing work that really...

Veritas/LV Large or Medium shoulder plane? Which one to buy?

Hi kevin, Unless you're going to be doing unusually large work I'd get the medium - it's quite big enough for most jobs and is lighter and more convenient.... Marcus

    Fraudulent web supplier?

Ha - milk paint.... I've just had my own odyssey with the stuff painting panels for a coffee table/bookcase. I learnt that it's damn hard to use, but worth the effort. I got mine in powdered form from these people http://www.lavenderandroses.net/ It's a beautiful finish if you want...

    150mm six hole sanding pad

Sorry this is a very boring question... I'm trying to find somewhere I can buy a replacement 150mm 6 hole velcro pad for my metabo random orbital sander. I've tried all the obvious places I can think of and have googled to no avail. The only ones i can find are 8 hole. I hope I'm not missing...

    Making doors

You can pin or wedge through dowels and this makes them quite a bit stronger.... (in the context of dowels, pinning involves driving a pin into a hole drilled in the endgrain of the dowel) Marcus

    wood plains

I second that - Clifton's are great planes, and you get a lot for your money... Marcus

    wood plains

It's not at all a bad idea to learn to plane timber by hand - it will increase both your skill and your confidence no end. After a while you may have had enough of it though, and might want to look at one of these http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axminster-CT330-330mm-Thicknesser-21831.htm...

    What have you learned today?

Hi Brian - painful isn't it?! What scares me is the speed with which things can go wrong with machines - one moment one is working quite happily, then - BANG - before you can even register it has happened, everything changes and there's blood everywhere... hopefully reading these...

    What have you learned today?

Well not long ago I learned that sanding a small component on a disc sander when tired and not paying attention can result in said small component being pulled down into the gap between the table and the disc, along with finger. Having almost an entire fingernail instantly sanded off hurts like...

    Plywood

The cost was £30 for the cutting. And yes the components were square and accurate - but then i am maybe lucky to have a good timber merchant with a decent machining department close at hand :D Perhaps there aren't so many of these left nowadays....

    Plywood

Some neat ideas here! Another idea, often overlooked, is to get it pre-cut by the timber merchant. I have a small workshop and when I need sheet materials I just email a cutting list off, and it all arrives cut to size on a pallet next day. I recently made some wardrobe carcasses which...

    the perfick bevel

To get that last bit of sharpness (the thing with the hairs) you will need an extra fine stone - 1200 grit minimum. This could be a diamond stone, japenese water stone, ceramic stone - or a piece of 1200 grit wet and dry paper on a bit of glass. If you're feeling patient, you could get an old...

    That's lovely - great job! :) Marcus

Quick Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane question

That's true, but in adjusting the above mentioned rebates it is nice to have the plane to reference off the side of the rebate and help keep things square. Not essential by any means - but nice.... I have the veritas bullnose which as a bonus converts into a chisel plane, and therefore I...

Quick Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane question

Although they are in the "nice to have" category if you ever need to adjust a stopped rebate once the frame is glued up.... For that matter does one really need a shoulder plane, or many of the other myriad tools we like to saddle ourselves with? At boatbuilding college I was taught to do...

Quick Veritas Medium Shoulder Plane question

Just tried it and yes it can. Just undo the top machine screw and the toe drops off. Marcus

Please help with my next Lee Valley/Veritas purchase!

I agree with Rod that the medium shoulder plane is a great tool - one of those things I wonder how I managed without.... The knob and finger hole just make so much difference when compared to any other shoulder plane on the market. It's ultra precise too. Marcus
