    More sharpening woes

I'm umming and ahhing about getting a pro edge, but I might end up doing something like this instead considering it's a fraction of the cost. How's the vibration on the record power grinder? I have a cheap screwfix and it's unbearable.

Where to buy small ammouts of timber please

Custard posted me some nice pieces of steamed pear a good while ago. Definitely an asset to the forum. Exactly what new woodworkers in this country need.

    Home base reductions

Thanks for the heads up. I'm after a workbench next week when my new shed arrives so I'll have a look.

ITA (Initial Teaching Alphabet). Anyone else a victim?

I always thought I was decent at maths, but I was trying to work out the dimensions of an end grain cutting board recently and I had to actually sit down and make a times tables grid so I could stick it on my workshop wall. I haven't put any of it in to practice in so long that it has just...

Beginners wood lathe - need a chuck?

I got a Clarke chuck thrown in with the lathe I bought. The chap included it because he just wanted rid of it but stressed that it wasn't worth using. Against his advice, I actually tried to use it and I really can't exaggerate how badly made the thing is. I struggle to understand how it passed...

Getting the hang of this scribing lark

I live in a Grade 2 Listed end terrace and I think whoever did the work on it (and hopefully didn't get paid too much) could probably learn a thing or two from this. Call me stupid, but how exactly do you use the compass to transfer the shape? Edit: Never mind, it clicked literally as I...

    Bobby's new build thread

How much of this are you doing yourself Bob and how much are you getting others in for? I also just had a look at the website for your kitchens and I'm very impressed.

    Bit of advice please

I'm pretty curious as to what they'll be used for.

    serious road traffic incident.

Photography laws are incredibly relaxed in this country. Most 'no filming' notices are suggestions and not enforceable in court. In fact, a girl I don't know particularly well posted on social media a few weeks ago that a guy had photographed her on the tram. Judging by the account he was an...

Beginners wood lathe - need a chuck?

I have the Record CL3. I bought it second hand for £400 with a chuck, a set of tools and a few more accessories like the attachment that holds a drill bit (drawing a blank on the name) and a few good quality face plates. I bought the Record SC4 chuck later new. I don't really use it enough to...

Applying a different finish over oil.

I turned an extremely spalted sycamore bowl a while ago; I intended it to be used for eating so I applied a simple walnut oil finish, but it's too big for an eating bowl and too small to be a fruit bowl so it's basically just been used to put things in on a sideboard. The oil has since cured...

    8x6 Shed advice

I too am getting the cheapest, nastiest 8x6 I can find. I've been using the previous tenant's badly put together effort, and I think starting from scratch would be a better idea rather than taking the thing with me. He decided to put it on slanted ground so my workbench has two long legs, my...

    Can Anyone Help

    I'm fairly sure that's Wall-E.

    workbench wood

I'd avoid ash simply because it's going extinct and it seems a waste to use it on a workbench. Pine's probably your best bet for cost effectiveness. It wont hurt too much if your bench takes a few blows here and there.

What did you do in your workshop today ?

Spent the morning listing things on eBay to raise some funds for the new workshop. This afternoon maybe a donut chuck or turning some plates. Edit: Ended up just doing a bottle opener and half the donut chuck. Probably need to drag the shop vac in there tomorrow as the sawdust is getting a bit...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Could you make a donut chuck out of MDF? I want to make one as large as I can, but I don't quite have enough plywood left. I have plenty MDF however.

    The most over hyped groups?

    Am I missing something?

    The most over hyped groups?

Exactly what we need, more poisonous negativity. It was this or a "Look at what this ***** made out of pallet wood and tried to sell on Etsy" thread. An underrated thread would have been nicer. If you don't like something, just ignore it.

    Camphor Laurel

I take it this is in Hampshire? I'd like a coffee table sized waney edged slab of something or other but I can't find anything that costs any less than a coffee table itself.

    Public/co-op woodworking spaces/workshops in London?

I think if you're sharing a space you'd probably want to bring along things that will need sharpening frequently, and maybe a method to do that. I don't know if those shared spaces have communal chisels and planes, but if they do it will almost definitely be a point of contention as to the best...
