Routing with the aid of template guides

I think I've only twice used a guide bush once with my little Elu, once for mortices in some framework, and once for hinges.

If that was a serious question, PCD = pitch circle diameter (means exactly the same as BCD) http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/article-Bolt ... DChart.htm

Smoothing very thin (1-2mm) thick wood

I agree. I think that's the answer for what I'm doing just now. And it doesn't even need any new tools.

Smoothing very thin (1-2mm) thick wood

Worth a try. I was doubting that a 1mm thick piece would stay put, but nothing to lose by giving it a go.

Smoothing very thin (1-2mm) thick wood

Hi, Has anyone got a cunning way to plane thin slices of wood? I've been sort of managing by holding the sheet down on the bench and using a block plane on the bit I'm not holding. I'm talking about starting with a thin slice sawn off a larger chunk, so one face is already planed. For...

I'm just wondering how much upwards force is expected, if four M6 machine screws aren't strong enough.

    Aftermarket blades for stanleys

On the Clifton cap irons the cut-out for the depth adjuster is in a different place than Stanley or Record parts. On a normal Stanley plane this means that it just about runs out of adjustment.

    router table top

What are you using for the table top? Is that a few layers of MDF glued together, or something more high-tech?

    Router table insert

Two reasons in my case. Firstly the table top will be probably 30 or 40mm thick (not yet finalised). Bolting the router to the underneath would lose 30 or 40mm of reach on the cutter, so probably useless. Secondly if I bolt the router onto the underneath of the main table top, I need to...

    Router table insert

I don't intend to secure the plate at all. Around 2.5kg of plate plus 5kg of router, sitting in a snug rebate in the table top, that's not going to go anywhere.

    (Old) Tool Buying on Impulse

Cheers. Still feeling some pangs of guilt for two reasons. Firstly for being weak and buying a Bedrock jointer just because it was there. Secondly for resolutely resisting the Record 311 on the shelf at the same junk shop.

    (Old) Tool Buying on Impulse

Prompted by Alf's comment that "old tools are better". Does anyone else find that a preference for old tools leads to the temptation to buy them when they turn up, or because "its a bargain", or because "you may never see another one of those"?

    Router collet size and bits?

Depending on the model, you may be able to get a 1/4" collet from say Trend or Wealden. Or a reducer from 8mm down to 1/4". http://www.wealdentool.com http://www.trend-uk.com/en/UK/productsu ... llets.html

    Advice on wood planes please!

I'd look for one with a recognised brand on the iron, Mathesion, Marples, or something (hopefully others can chip in with their favourites) Having said that I think the iron condition is important. A neglected plane could have an iron so pitted that it would take a lifetime to get it prepared.

Fittings for musical instrument carrying case

Thanks for that. They have some stuff there, but clearly its not a main area of interest for them compared to furniture and joinery hardware. They have latches that I could use, but no handles or any sort of lock that would suit a case rather than a door.
