Hand Tool Wish List 1399 Router Plane

I think the attractive thing about the tyzack/Preston design is the wide base and visibility. Wooden versions seem closed and bulky by comparison, but this is all based on never having used a router plane in my life  It just seems a more stable configuration. But I’ve always used chisels...

Hand Tool Wish List 1399 Router Plane

Surely one of these would be reasonably easy to knock together from steel plate? Is there a problem with making it from steel plate, cutting out the holes, epoxying a few nuts and studding onto it and bob’s your mother’s brother? I know nothing about metalworking, some of you will have worked...

    Selling my fathers woodworking machines

It’s a difficult one to handle on the site as the For Sale section is a benefit for members so they don’t have to negotiate ebay etc. Sadly, this subject comes up every so often. Recently Lindas has gone through a similar problem and their thread is here. At least it will give you an idea of the...

    Electric hammer

John was there and you weren’t. It has stuck in his mind in a way that other apprentice pranks didn’t. It probably was racist. Fair play for mentioning it John.

    Where does fraud start?

Question to the pros on here, how can you find a good tradesman? I have jobs that never get done around the house and I’d love to get someone in to do them, but I fear getting a wrong’un so they never get done. Second question is what are the red flags when you are estimating for a job? Seems...

    Well, that didn't work

No experience with that product, but Have you tried putting a finish on a sample? Those light patches should go pretty dark after absorbing the finish. Try it with a bit of vegetable oil rubbed on it and see if it’s any better.

    Advice for finishing english beech

A Matt finish will not make the most of the grain. Usually a Matt finish is milky due to scattering of light from the surface, so I’d recommend a 20 or 30% satin finish as a compromise. Osmo poly-x is a good durable non-fussy finish...not sure about stains for beech though.

    Rough Carpentry: Little Garden Fence

I love the idea of using proper joints instead of metal fixings. Does anyone know if this was ever a common technique for fencing?

Nitrile is what you want to look for. Better resistance to solvents than latex and other alternatives and pretty tough too. I bought these a while ago... https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00 ... UTF8&psc=1
