    Please help if you can

Usually there is less static build up on humid days. The charge is dissipated through the moisture in the air. I would certainly follow Bob's advice rather than mine! From your photo it looks like the suppressor has blown.

Couldn't work out if he meant next to the cap, or on the side of the cap. If it's next to the cap it could be a coincidence. It's just odd that the RCDs didn't trip. Anyway, plenty of people better qualified than me to help I'm sure.

    Does the cap look damaged?

    Please help if you can

I should start by saying that i'm not an electrician or experienced in electrical installation in any way. I am a chemistry and physics teacher. Sounds like it could be a dust explosion as it sounds as though the spark and explosion was all within the ducting. Static can build up in dry...

Adverts in Google Chrome. Can I stop them?

I got malware like you describe once. I was looking at information on Barn Owl distribution in the UK. There was a link to Barn Owl population Analysis. So I clicked on it. I'll let your imagination tell you where it led...took me hours to navigate my way out of that site!!

Could I use an AVO meter to test moisture content in Timber?

I assume whether you measure along or across the grain is important?

    Steam bending oak. ??

Right, s*d theory, just done an experiment. Flask of water heated from below with a bunsen burner, fed through a still head into a small cardboard box. Temperature measured in the water, at the top of the still head and in the box: Temperature of boiling (distilled) water - 100C Temperature of...

Anyone had any luck with one of these?

I had the same problem with my homemade frame saw (made from an old "FOR SALE" board post...not as nice as yours). I used a pruning/bow saw blade thingy which I think wasn't deep enough. I found the blade wandering and it was difficult to jeep the frame level. If the blade wanders consistently...

Could I use an AVO meter to test moisture content in Timber?

Cool! I love that guy's approach to problems. Certainly cheaper than buying a megger!

Could I use an AVO meter to test moisture content in Timber?

I guess the answer is...give it a go. I think a standard multimeter only puts a 1 volt potential across the electrodes, so it may need a bit more to encourage a current to pass. There are meters for testing insulation (made by Megger for example), which put a voltage of 400volts across the...

    My wife is revolting

Had a colleague from Taiwan come over to work with me in the 80's. First day we went down to the canteen and Austin (for it was he) went first. He put Brussels sprouts and baked beans on his plate and sat down to eat!...from then on he asked me to go first and had the same.

Antique tool box - valuation of tools?

Those are mortise chisels (known as pig stickers I think). I'm no expert, but I have bought plenty of rusty tools! I can't see anything of particular interest to collectors. Planes tend to go for the highest prices, but the ones in this chest aren't rare enough to attract their attention. I'll...

    Waiting for the postman...

There's always a spring somewhere that disappears over your shoulder and into the foot deep pile of shavings around your shins!

    Waiting for the postman...

I love taking stuff apart to see how it works. Very occasionally I can even get it back together again so that it does work!

Just won this on e*#y. Can't be bad for 5 quid (and ten quid p&p) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/330751835699?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_500wt_922 Been itching for a Yankee 1555 for some time, just to see how the clever ratchety thingymabob works. Needs a scrub up too...

Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy - Live

I heard a physicist explaining his idea that a black hole Event horizon could be thought of as a three dimensional projection of a four dimensional universe (just as a hologram is a two dimensional projection of three dimensional space). The interviewer was nodding along and the following...

A subtle gloat for a new daddy :)

The drive home from the maternity ward is the most nerve wracking of your life. Twenty miles an hour tops...did you strap him in properly...fret...fret.

Hitch Hikers Guide to The Galaxy - Live

I have that edition too. It's like bible paper. I remember loving the fold out maps when I was a lad. I'm currently reading LOTR as a bedtime story for my younger son (as I did for my older son). I'm doing gollum with a brummie accent (mixed with Fagin from Oliver) and it works quite well. My...
