    Shooting board plane.

Jacob, I think of you as Geoff Boycott. Opinionated and frequently right. I can't get offended at your statements of fact even if I disagree. Just as Boycott Bingo has swept the nation...so should Jacob Bingo. Eyes down for a full house...rounded bevels, Paul Sellers, sharpening guides, frog...

    First lathe

Good point about the skill of the turner being most important. I love this video that illustrates that point perfectly... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wnv0DAR_gWA

Fibres...they get stuck in your finish and annoy you.

    Lint free cloth

Definitely off! I had to buy mine myself...I felt like Father Ted in the lingerie department! (It was on the market actually, but the principle is the same :D)

Anything absorbent inside an old pair of tights. I have used kitchen towel in the past. Ball it up, push it down the tights, tie a knot and cut it off. ...ask permission first!!

I have used bicarbonate of soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate), no problems. You just need something that will dissolve to form ions in the water to make it conductive. Baking powder will work just as well...you could even get away with vinegar I bet (haven't tried it though).

    Getting tooled up

It is often said that the two tasks that are the biggest pain to do by hand are ripping and dimensioning stock. The bandsaw and P/T can take a lot of the elbow grease out of those tasks, leaving you time to get creative with the proceeds.

Planed rounded Scandanavian redwood - 8 seat picnic bench

You could just run a hand plane along the edges to chamfer the sharpness. It would only take a couple of condos and you can control the depth of cut easier than faffing about with a router. Not round though.

Ain't no body on acoustic guitar. Superb. (Video)

When you play guitar, it makes it more amazing what these guys can do. My special skill is making the easy seem difficult.

Agree that Tommy is an amazingly talented player and a great showman too.

Amazing! He's friends with my son's guitar teacher...and a nice bloke to boot! Try this... http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nY7GnAq6Znw As someone who can barely play guitar and loses it completely when I try to play and sing at the same time...my jaw hit the floor the first time I saw it.

I used one of the (very many) phone chargers I have in a dusty drawer. I just cut the jack plug off and exposed the wires. It worked great for small things like planes...not sure you could do a v8 engine block with it though!

Here is what i learned from my experimentation with the technique: Use mild steel for the anode (+), not stainless steel. Stainless steel releases chromium ions into the water which are carcinogenic. Throw some bicarb into the water for the electrolyte. Warm water works better than cold...
