Pitstone Green Museum (Buckinghamshire) - Rural life etc

It's pretty much only bank holidays that it's open, which is a real shame. I live just up the road from Pitstone and visited about ten years ago. From memory there was also a Lancaster bomber cockpit and a brilliant steam powered radio.

    Cleaning old guitar

Was just about to say that ^ Magnets in the pickups attract any bits that come off the wire wool and it can cause problems. I've found coconut oil to be too at removing that sticky feel from old wood. It's in most supermarkets too. Taking the strings off will make cleaning much easier, and a...

What to treat a jig with for easy sliding?

Be careful of silicone based polishes around any wood that will be surface finished. Minute contamination of the surface will cause pinholes and craters in your finish. I used to work in automotive paint production and the workers were given a list of banned cosmetics and deodorants to prevent...

How do we get kids to be engineers

Unfortunately the teachers are all pushed to the limit delivering the curriculum. All of the nice to have and enriching activities are squeezed out of our schools by overbearing assessment and data. I would love to run a science and engineering club at my school, but I am exhausted just doing...

    Aluminium Primer help

Paint tins are best stored upside down. The paint seals the rim of the can preventing air getting in and curing the paint, and any pigment that settles will be on the lid and can more easily be reincorporated into the binder.

    Aluminium Primer help

If it's a part used tin, it could be that it wasn't mixed properly at first. If you use the thinner top portion, the settled lower portion will be relatively more viscous. A little thinner will help, but be sparing. Add it from the cap (pour some thinners into the cap of the thinner can and then...

    Table saw buying advice

I guess the first question should always be, what do you need it for? I looked at table saws because I wanted to cut down sheet materials (MDF and ply), then I realised with limited space, I really needed a track saw. Much more compact and portable, which was perfect for my small work area. If...

    Low salt bread recipes

You can store dried yeast in the fridge. I keep mine in the fridge door and it works perfectly every time. The cold just suppresses the activity of the yeast, it doesn't kill it. As soon as it is up to room temperature (within a minute or two), it works fine.

    wooden window frame joinery

I think people get the idea that oak is a premium wood and everything else is worse idea stuck in their heads.

    Renovating old Loudspeakers

Cherry is a popular veneer for speakers, could be that? It depends on how fussy you are about your speakers. If you refinish them so the colour is even, you might not notice the dent so much. Otherwise, I think it might be difficult to match filler or replacement veneer. You will need to do...

    Carboot finds

Yep, cheap as chips, so one for pilot and one countersink. Also, because they are longer, easier to keep perpendicular. Rarely run out of charge

Removing Spray Adhesive From A Float Glass Lapping Plate

Coconut oil is good too. I use it for getting sticker gunk off LP sleeves. Works a treat. Idly wandering around Ikea Bargain Corner this afternoon saw a pallet full of glass doors (about 500x150mm) in frames for a couple of quid each. Thought they would make great lapping plates for scary sharp...

New Meddings owner. If I've learnt one single thing...

I nearly gave myself a hernia lifting my fobco star onto the bench. I tried it in two pieces and realised I didn't have the overhead clearance to lift the drill onto the pillar! So I had to lift the whole thing on my own. Managed to get it lying down on the bench, then couldn't stand the bloody...

    Antikythera mechanism

That's just beautiful, really brought a tear to my eye. A terrific statement about what makes humanity so amazing. Firstly the invention of such a complex machine from antiquity, and secondly the respect for knowledge passed to bring it back to life. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Of interest to Luthiers and others...

I would have sworn the violin bass had an f hole. My mind must have placed it there subconsciously because violin. :D Quite a bit of the neck finishing was left out I think. Looks like the guy was using a scraper (or a knife as a scraper) along the back of the neck. I'd be surprised if that was...

    Whisky Wall Cabinet

Really like that live edge. I'm sure the drink you make with dregs is Old Tennis Shoe, wasn't that in Steinbeck's brilliant Cannery Row?

Pouring wood finish from the can without spillage

I used to be a paint chemist, so I spent half my life pouring from these tins. Trick is to pour with the spout at the top to allow air to enter the can as the liquid comes out (no glugging). If the can is absolutely full, then you need to hold the container you are pouring into against the...
