    Darwin Award nomination

I remember someone losing a hand to burns caused by plaster of Paris in a school a few years ago.

A bookcase on hinges - is it feasible?

Haha, I saw that “doorcase” last year when I visited the Peak District. Still going strong, and a memorable addition to a great bookshop.

    Cordless drill

I bought a double pack of Makita hammer/driver and impact driver last year before starting my decking and it was great. Battery lasts ages and holds charge when not in use for weeks too.

Trying linseed paint - £141.68 for 1 litre

Has anyone tried making their own linseed oil paint? Pretty easy to do I'd imagine.

You are correct, any finish you use will allow water through to some extent. I used to formulate car paint for OEM and refinish and we had to test water soak and humidity exposure. Despite them being very sophisticated 2 pack coatings baked at up to 130C they still absorbed moisture. Any coating...

    Ikea Cheap Rubbish Material?

If you visit Bargain Corner, they sell distressed furniture at 75%+ discount. I have picked up sheet goods in the past for peanuts because it had a slight ding on one corner. Some of their sheet goods are great quality, others not so much.

    Recording TV

Big advantage of PVR vs catch up is that you don't have to watch the ads. I bought my Humax Mocha FVP4000t from Richer sounds in an open box sale. It was obviously returned from a customer and had an HDMI and Ethernet cable missing, so I got £40 knocked off. When I got it home I decided to see...

    Grandsons guitar

Sounds like it's going to be more of a wall hanger than a player then! :D Neck is screwed on from the rear for a Strat.

    Jaguar XF sport brake

Owned, but pretty much all of the R&D, manufacture and supply chain is in the UK. It's in a much better state than it was when it was American ;)

Fender Strat scale length is usually 648mm. If it's not an original fender part, you can't rely on that. Measure from the nut to the twelfth fret and double that distance to find the scale length of the neck you have. The scale length is critical, if the nut to bridge length is incorrect, it...

    It's Mystery tools time again

Rope making? Actually, looking closer, there would be evidence of wear and rubbing around the narrow entrances to the "mould". Good puzzle!

    Grandsons guitar

Ah! If it's a strat or telecaster style guitar, the hole won't matter much. They sometimes do swimming pool routes, pretty much removing the whole of the area under the scratchplate to allow for maximum flexibility with which pickups you can use. Bridge pickups with tremelo blocks are often...

    Grandsons guitar

I wouldnt worry too much. I assume you mean off the pole pieces (the circular magnets) rather than off the pickup (the whole unit)? That should be fine, try to place it so that the spacing is as even as possible. You might have to fill the hole a bit one side and extend the hole the other side...

    Grandsons guitar

Strings passing directly over the pole pieces isn't critical. You can't hear a drop off in output when you bend a string away from being above the pole piece.. I assume the strings are wider than the pickups? Is there much in it? There are a couple of options, blade pickups which don't have...

    making drawers for the workbench

Just watched a workbench build that used that method... https://youtu.be/wSJEy35J5vg Drawer construction starts at 15:21, but the whole build is quite interesting.
