    Dining Table Finish?

Thanks again Richard. Advice I'll certainly bear in mind. I was leaning towards the acrylic lacquer for the very reason you've identified (longer open time).

    Dining Table Finish?

Thanks Richard, - I haven't actually purchased the finish yet preferring instead to research before buying! Probably going to be chestnut acrylic or melamine lacquer. The top is oak with wenge inlay so nothing that should be too difficult to finish. Just looking for a bit of extra durability!

    Dining Table Finish?

I'll be hand finishing a dining table in the not too distant future (he says with fingers crossed!). Obviously looking for a durable finish and research has lead me to a couple of coats of a shellac sealer followed by wipe on melamine. Anyone know if this is the best option?

    Oysters

.... no, - not those gopping fish thingies! I've got a small lignum 'log' and the only real use I can think of is a few oysters. It's many years old and as dry as a bone so I have no worries on that score. Is it best to cut straight across or on the diagonal? I'm inclined to cut straight as...

    Tenon size?

This is my interpretation of Jacobs comment above. With just about 22mm rail thickness and 2mm shoulders at the sides (20mm at the top and bottom) I have a tenon of 18mm 'thick'.

    Tenon size?

The legs are tapered it just doesn't show in the drawing (10mm from just below the rail). This may increase depending on how it ends up looking. I tend to find drawing gives me the basics but then I find myself changing bits and pieces as work progresses as there's nothing like 'in the flesh'...

    Tenon size?

Eric, Wasn't planning on drawboring although that could change! It is a dining table and won't get moved around very much at all so I think I'm comfortable without. However I'm going to use some wenge inlay to match an existing piece so it might actually look quite nice if I did (although that...

    Tenon size?

Thanks all, - useful information. Now the work starts!

    Tenon size?

As per usual I'm probably over thinking this! Dining table with 90mm square legs. Rail is 20mm thick and 140mm wide. I'm familiar with the rule of thirds and this would give a tenon of just over 6mm thick and 95mm wide. I was going to go for 60mm 'deep'. I'm feeling that 6mm is to flimsy and...

    Everyone Vote in Scotland Independance

A real mixture of feelings ....... Just like the mother in law driving off a cliff in my brand new BMW! Delighted the Union is 'safe' but I will not easily forgive the ***** Cameron for putting it at risk the way he has. The no campaign was a disgrace and promising even more 'stuff' at the...

    Spiral router bits

Thanks Gents, From what's been said it may not be worth the effort of trying one out. Plus I suspect they're more difficult to sharpen yourself? I'll carry on as I am for now! :D

    Spiral router bits

Could somebody please provide an idiots guide to the use of spiral router bits? (Both up and down) I tend to be a straightforward two flute kind of guy (keep it clean!) and wonder if I'm missing a trick somewhere?

    Recommend a courier.

I've used them loads and never had an issue! :D

    Sink installation - stretchers

I think every sink I've installed I've had to butcher the stretcher in some way. I'm not a pro but I've done a few! If you're concerned about strength afterwards you can consider bracing but in my experience when it's all pulled together it gains some strength from what's around it. Good luck!

    'Warped' table saw blade

I put the old blade back and it was fine, put the new blade on and that was fine as well! Took it off a couple of times, even turned it round the wrong way and checked and no problems. Straight edge is an engineering one so I've no concerns about that. I have absolutely no idea what the issue...

    'Warped' table saw blade

Time to change blades thinks I so off I trot to the internet and purchase for myself a nice freud 305 mm blade. In the process of fitting I'm aligning the riving knife with the blade when the straightedge appears to show a 'concave' blade. Change the straightedge and still the same result...

    Finishing oak flooring. Round II

I've used ronseal floor oil quite sucessfully on a kitchen floor. Took lots of hard wear before any recoating required. Does need an overnight dry but smell minimal. Good stuff IMHO.

    kity 419 table saw

I had exactly the same problem and it caused me many and issue trying to set the blade vertical. I believe NMA who used to be the main distributors upgraded to a handle with brass teeth? Worth a Google?

    Hinge help

I don't quite know why I'm struggling so much with this one. Initially I though I was in full on numpty mode and had missed the obvious (e.g. butt hinges). However, with only 90 degree opening I really haven't been able to find anything that doesn't have massive overlap with the opening. If I...

    Which planer/thicknesser?

I was trying to think of a constructive response while reading through the thread then came to Bob's last post. He's spot on really. I can't think of many (any?) machines that would last outdoors let alone hobby style. They'll get eaten alive I'm afraid. Unless you really, really need them now...
