    Measure Twice, Cut Once

That would be because we haven't bought any new trains ;)

    Click cabinates

Not used them but had a good look while sourcing our new kitchen. Don't go near them is my advice - the pieces fit together by means of a (to my mind) very thin tongue into a very thin slot or groove. so no mechanical fixing (at least in their demo video in store). In the end we got a Wickes...

    Shed Roof

2x4's will sag over 3m. I had the same query over a carport and was advised to go for 2x6 or even 2x8 over 3m Steve

    Incredible music machine

Indeed it is CGI - there are a whole series of them. Intel did sponsor a real life version however, which works pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCIkbr9HCcw Steve

    Symptoms of dehydration

Put the dioralyte in something like blackcurrant squash - tis what the doc recommended for one of my sons when he was little and kept throwing it up. Worked a treat. You never empty your entire stomach, so even when you do vomit you retain some of the fluid. Steve

Things to be aware of when moving house!

I completed and moved last week. So I have a couple of other things to add to the list! Don't believe any time estimates. We had renters buying our property and were buying an empty one. Shortest three step chain possible and estimates from sale to completion were 6-8 weeks once we had a buyer...

    covering red paint

Masonry paint (smooth, not textured!) covers a multitude of sins including hard to cover damp stains and ceiling marks as well as previous layers of darker paints. Steve

    Tanking a basement

Oldroyd do membranes that are available to the home user and have a range of options. I looked into this some 5 years ago when doing my cellar. In the end it was dry enough that I simply put in stud walls with CLS, kingspan and OSB, then plasterboard and a skim over the top of that. Stayed dry...

    Vibrating plate exercise machine

No use for weight loss whatsoever I am afraid. They were a fad about 2 years ago and alot of gyms installed them, but primarily as 'toning' machines for already lean people or for rehabilitation after injury - this latter is the reason my gym installed two, as they also have a physio on site. He...

    Some advice please....

Cut a circle - look at both ends and measure. If one is smaller than the other then either your table is not square or you are pushing the cut. The latter tends to chew the zero clearance insert on the table after a while, which a non-square table will not do. Steve

    Puzzle box

I bought my wife a proper Japanese puzzle box a few years ago for xmas as she had always wanted one. Cost a fortune but when it arrived the craftsmanship was superb and clearly worth the price. The actual mechanism seems to be made from balsa or similar type wood and is cut to the absolute...

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 phone - unreliable

The iOS 6.1 update is reportedly only affecting some 4S iphones, with vodafone advising customers not to upgrade the iOS yet. Apple of course are saying nothing..... info taken from the tech blog on the BBC news website. Steve

    pic test

I have that saw also, but you seem to have modified the top blade clamp by adding a knurled wheel rather than the usual alan key fitting - is this one of your own design or a bought mod? I have also taken the NVR switch off mine as it was a pain in the backside! Steve

Newbie, 1st try at making something "useful" - any comments?

Many thanks for the detailed post - very useful to any new scrollers out there! To address some of your observations specifically, variable speed saws are useful for different projects and materials, but I have never found the need to vary the speed within a single project. It would sound like...

    New Scroller

Cannot see any reason why this would not work from a cutting point of view, provided the saw is firmly attached to your base. The reason it probably isn't done routinely is due to practicality - saws are heavy and can be difficult to move. They are typically bolted down to avoid further movement...

A tip off a USA forum

Somewhat related, but when cutting jigsaw, and in particular figurals within them, it would be handy to print these onto a paper that has a minimal tackiness to it - think of post-it-note level of stick but across either an entire sheet or that level of tackiness to a sheet of labels. These...
