A few years ago my wife decided it would be the height of fashion to finish the kitchen in a deep red, silk emulsion, Suggestions welcome on best way to cover with a light colour.

In my experience, silk emulsion is hard to cover because of the slightly shiny surface. Likely to require numerous coats, particularly as it's a dark colour you are trying to cover. I'd try sanding it down to get rid of the gloss. If all else fails, you could try a plain lining paper and then paint that.

Moral of the story - always use matt emulsion, not silk.

Cheers

Masonry paint (smooth, not textured!) covers a multitude of sins including hard to cover damp stains and ceiling marks as well as previous layers of darker paints.

Thanks for suggestions, I am sure I can sort it now.
I did voice my concerns at the time, but as you all know its not worth arguing.
