The actual mechanism seems to be made from balsa or similar type wood and is cut to the absolute finest tolerance possible. The outside (yosegi) is actually a specialisation in itself and made by a different person to the box maker. Suffice to say, I have given up all hope of being able to make one to those tolerances myself, and still get it down from the shelf and marvel at the craftsmanship occasionally!
