I am thinking of buying a vibrating plate exercise machine purely to lose weight. I cannot do physical exercises due to a disability. I was wondering if anyone had one and if so was it effective.

Save your money by not buying one and eating less and maybe healthier. You will lose weight and be better off. If you find it difficult to diet your doctor will advise. Many people, with or without disabilities, have found help with weight loss through clubs like Weight-watchers. I believe that the vibrating machine will be of no help whatsoever. Good luck.

If only it were as simple as eating less and more heathily. There are all sorts of other factors both mental and physical involved and everyone is different.

As for joining a 'club' this is not easy for many - they are private and do not want to do anythin of this type in a public arena. This type of environment can be very intimidating and competitive, just like 'going to a gym to get fit'.

You've only got to see the huge number of 'diet' plans that have been toted over the years and just how much money continues to spent on them.

In the case of the original question I wonder if you have asked your gp for advice. With any weight loss gadget I would search the web as often there are good reviews as to their actual effectiveness. Most seem to only gave a marginal (if any) effect and nearly always have to be used in conjunction with a controlled diet.

No use for weight loss whatsoever I am afraid. They were a fad about 2 years ago and alot of gyms installed them, but primarily as 'toning' machines for already lean people or for rehabilitation after injury - this latter is the reason my gym installed two, as they also have a physio on site. He specifically told anyone who asked they were for rehab and not weight loss.

Depending on your disability, swimming is generally considered the least stressful exercise since the water supports your body, but I realise swimming is not everyone's cup of tea. Walking can also be gentle exercise, but again depends on disability. A chat with your GP would be the best bet, they can then advise you as to what is suitable and probably put you in touch with someone who can help and advise more specifically. The NHS is very keen on this 'self help' approach at the moment, as it prevents worse (and more expensive) problems later on

Get advice from your GP, I struggle to walk very far, but still try to increase the distance I walk daily, if I use my wheelchair I like to turn the wheels myself, again it's a little exercise. It's frustrating when your trying to loose weight but find exercise virtually impossible because of your disability, so anything you try, take it slowly, build up distance or momentum, don't go all out and try to do whats impossible for you, a little often is the best advice I was given.

Take care
