Hobbies (of Dereham) pattern 1935 era

Well done! I am also not a fan of ply for these sorts of designs as the edges just scream out at me even if its veneer faced ply. Thus your solution is good. Its a very striking grain for pine, the soft stuff we get over here is almost featureless. Glad it stands up! One way to ensure it does...

WIP Comp Entry - Jewellery Box (withdrawl from comp)

Bit of a delay over the last week as SWMBO had to go into hospital for surgery. Its looking more and more unlikely I will finish this by the end of October! Started on the glue-up of the side panels after routing a groove in the bottom crossrail for the base. Both sides are now glued and...

    Baby proofing

Plug protectors are a good idea simply because children WILL stick things in holes, not necessarily when crawling but around 2 years old its top fun! A bigger concern for me was pulling a plug out of a socket and touching the pins while half exposed. For this reason we put covers on a few of our...

Which fixing? 3x3 post to a wall

Really depends on the quality of the masonry you want to attach to. If its friable, flaky or soft (eg victorian brick and horse hair mortar) then I would vote for resin and studding personally. If its recent blockwork or good solid brick then go with the thunderbolt. Steve

    Postmen.

Cannot really see the point - strikes never work. All they do is cost the strikers wages, inconvenience the public and give air time to eejits such a Bob Crowe et al. Can anyone actually remember the last time a strike was effective - never achieves anything on London Underground, postal workers...

    Rising wind investments

Yeah, because a cat will only drag half a dead mouse through your house, smearing entrails and body parts up the stairs where it finally delivers the still warm carcass remains to you in bed as a present for being such a lovely owner. Not because they are malevolent balls of spite with claws in...

    COMPETITION...the end is nigh

Oh yes, but I am not sure it is connected to anything  Not so much 24 days as 3 weekends - can I get an extension sir, for being off on paternity leave sir, please sir? I did do it sir, but the dog ate it sir. I know it looks like the dog actually made it but sloppy joints are all the...

    RAS for sale

Is it in Kent as well? Couple of questions - Do you have a model number, does it do angled cuts or only straight crosscuts and what is the approx width of crosscut please? Also overall depth of the machine from front to back would be useful to make sure I can house it. Might well be interested...

    Retirement at 66, not politics

That is indeed the case - the size of the pension deficit is simply staggering and is the main reason alot of final salary schemes are closing - current members simply are not and cannot afford to pay in enough to meet existing and projected liabilities. Multiply that to the state pension and...

    Rockwool bargain....REAL bargain

According to the Npower website this offer is now no longer on - it was limited to the first 5000 customers. They are doing 2 for 1 still, but everywhere does that including B&Q and homebase et al. Free delivery might still be worth it if you need alot though. Steve

    2x6mm ply=12mm ply?

A glue line will not be a problem so long as you have an even thin coat of adhesive. If it goes lumpy then you run the risk of a small void when you cut into the glued up piece. As for strength, the ply laminations are glued together so one more will not hurt :) Steve.

WIP Comp Entry - Jewellery Box (withdrawl from comp)

Bit of a result today - had the day off work to do some painting but due to the weather managed to grab a couple of hours working on this instead. First job was to rout the grooves for the panel sides in the frame pieces I had already made The grooves are centered on the rails and legs to...

WIP Comp Entry - Jewellery Box (withdrawl from comp)

Well alot has happened since I did the sketchup design for this, and I am very unlikely to finish before the deadline but I aim to give it a go anyway! So as of this weekend I have made a start on the building. First cut some of the frame components in oak after preparing from sawn timber with...

    5k Challange

Sure, it can be done. The answer you get and the options on offer to you however will depend to a large degree on what type of woodworker you are/want to be and how much of a hand tool v machine tool preference you have. No two people will give you the same answer. For some it will be a...

Builder starting small extension, will I regret it

One word for kitchens - Ikea. don't laugh, easy to fit, cheaper than B&Q (slightly) much cheaper than Homebase. You can design yourself, they always have stuff in stock (unlike B&Q, DAMHIKT) and they deliver if necessary. The only downside is their styles tend to be quite modern, but if that...
