Quality Mid Range Hand Planes ?

Well, although still legal, that is a bit immoral - I hadn't spotted that. Fortunaltely I shan't be tempted as some LV Cliftons and LN already on the shelf, and then there's the Rolls Royce back up service. (Hmmm. Can I still say that? Isn't it really a VW or a Beemer or whatever?)

Festool Vac (vice / clamping) system

The Ax device includes a venturi vac pump, (Built in? Separate?) so price is not quite so bad.

EU To ban Nitromors! - Lobby your MEP NOW!!!

I believe it's methylene dichloride which is the carcinogen. What ever it is, it's been recognised for years by HSE as a potential problem. It's also used (main one for me) as an adhesive for polycarbonate. Also found in (buggexxed) brush cleaners, but no one here ever uses that...

    Sharpening Japanese Chisels

DC has been writing about grinding Japanese chisels on his Tormek for some years. The new Tormek plane/chisel jig is designed with Japanese blades in mind, (references from the flat face) and copes with tapered blades. Good upgrade for any wetstone grinder. Any tapered blade is likely to slip...

Quality Mid Range Hand Planes ?

It seems there's a few rather overprotective uncapitalist viewpoints out there! Once patents have lapsed, as they have many years ago for the standard and bedrock designs, anyone is free to make and sell a similar item. And existing makers take this into account when deciding to enter the...

    F-clamps opinions

Another vote for Toolstation. I got 10 each 200 & 300mm when on sale less 10% a couple of years back. Not quite as strong as you might think from the dimensions, (but strong enough for normal woodwork) and of the 20 bought, about 4 needed some attention. I also have some Urko from Tilgear, top...

    JPT-310 digital thickness gauge

I have one on my Jet 310. Why should anyone want one? well, when set up you can easily thickness to 0.1mm. That's as measured by vernier caliper, (the scale itself reads I think! in divisions of 0.02mm) and with no bending down peering at the parallax ridden pointer either! The pointer does tell...

    Discount.

Ax'ster is getting big ideas, as they now have a Marketing Manager. I presume that's the reason for higher catalogue prices (they jumped a lot if you recall) and regular TopTool mailings of stuff on discount (just about), and "email club" 10% discounts. A flurry of marketing "activity", all paid...

    Performance Pro Shop Vac

Having spent all on a Festool 12v drill I couldn't afford their bags let alone their Vac and boom arm. However a spring balancer on the ceiling does just as well for 20 quid. This takes (balances) the weight of the hose and lets it move about with ease. If you want to do 8' routs you might need...

    Planer thicknesser problems

Yup, outfeed rollers should be smooth, either plain steel or maybe rubber coated (like a typewriter). They can move up and down under a spring load, to allow for timber thickness changes. This spring pressure is usually adjustable. If wax and a clean does not help much, try screwing the...

Aligning dual-lift P/T tables (Jet etc)

Alignment / Adjustment of dual lift P/T tables: The Jet family of P/Ts with dual-lift, or 'raise-together' tables has a UK manual lacking adjustment instructions. This is a problem, as the tables will require periodic checking and adjustment to allow for wear. The USA manual which can be...

About MDF in most retail stores

I don't think I've ever paid more than £15 for a single full sheet of 18mm MDF. Wickes is usually cheapest but doesn't have a panel saw like B&Q.

    "Acrylic"

Lexan is polycarbonate (generic name), good for guards etc as fairly crack proof (lens in safety goggles for eg) but it's not as rigid as acrylic.

    record pt300 vs jet jpt-310

UK voltage is "harmonised" with EU so stuff from anywhere can be used anywhere. Power station voltages are not constant - they drop during ads when a billion 3Kw kettles go on - quoted volts are something like +/- 10%, and our 230V is at the top end of the EU voltage "band". I'd buy another Jet...

Felder group on Yahoo - help! how to join?

It sems the Yahoo software is not too clever (seems it's in beta). Bob had the same trouble when he tried to create a new test ID. Unlike me he got a respose from the helpline, which he PMed me. It works! You have to create your username (or alias) in the "manage your identity" section of your...

Felder group on Yahoo - help! how to join?

Thought I might join in the interests of research: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/f ... odworking/ However the procedure for joining seems rather well hidden! I have obtained a Yahoo email address and can thus log on to Yahoo itself. When I click on "join the group" I'm asked to create...

Quality Mid Range Hand Planes ?

Be a good place to start, provided theyre not too cheaply put together. Plenty of warped surfaces to flatten, but probably no worse than any other modern lower priced offering. I wonder if the block plane has a 'proper' bed like the LN and a cap long enough to press the blade onto it?
