    Bit too warm!

Likewise here in Kent. I'd be working in my pants but I reckon the apprentice would call in the Operation Yewtree squad.

    Looking for guidance...

Any of you who have seen any of my (few and far between) projects or WIPS will know that when it comes to finishing my entire repertoire consists of "sand to 150 grit, two, three or four (for special occasions) coats of Tung Oil and then Beeswax." I've almost managed to convince myself that...

    Cheese board

Just so you know, being a keen cook I have 'lots' of chopping boards, made from leftovers from table tops, worktops and the like. Oak, Maple, Walnut, Hickory, Beech, Iroko and even Sapele. The only wood I regularly use in the workshop that hasn't made it's way into the kitchen is Douglas Fir...

    COT WIP (mk2)

That, Sir, is chuffing fantastic. =D> =D> =D> =D> \:D/ Hats off to you. I don't personally think it matters whether it's a power tool build or a hand tool build - it's a lovely piece of furniture, personal to you and yours and made by you. That's what makes it special. Well done.

Round Table question - An Update.

Thanks Steve. I've considered the Torsion box approach before for various table tops but I fear that on this project the client will insist on a solid wood top. If I had any experience with applying veneers then I think I would try harder to convince him otherwise, but veneering is something...

Round Table question - An Update.

Thanks Andy, that all makes perfect sense. Although it is yet to be discussed I am pretty certain the client will be against MDF or PLY. Solid wood is probably what he'll want (given his previous instructions on other projects) and will not be talked out of it. I'm pretty certain that we'll be...

Round Table question - An Update.

Or I could bolt it to the floor!! I feared this would be a tricky one. I may try and convince the client to go for a tripod leg design instead. By the way Steve, surely you should be out in the garden putting the finishing touches to your somewhat palatial workshop? Is today a well deserved...

    Richard Maguire workbench

Personally I'd say that getting a bench with decent work holding is more important than how you go about getting it. If you've got the dosh and you don't mind spending it then buy one - fair play. If you haven't got the dosh then make one as quick as you can so you can get started - 4 x 2, ply...

Round Table question - An Update.

Thanks guys for the swift response. I fear I may not have been clear enough in my description. The table needs to resemble this one.... Not necessarily in terms of detailing but in the way it's made - central column with three or four splayed feet. Most of the ones I've seen never have the...

Round Table question - An Update.

I've been asked to make a round table for a client who is wheelchair bound. He wants it made a little higher than normal table height so as to be able to get his wheelchair under the table whilst sitting at it. The table is to have a diameter of 1m and a single middle leg with three or four...

    alcove wardrobe Qs

As above, 18mm MR MDF for the carcasses. I level in a 50 x 50 batten front and back on the floor with shims and packers to sit the carcasses on. The width you have is right on the limit for 18mm. Either double it up as suggested, use 25mm for the tops, bases and shelves or put in a central...

    Dovetail marking out

Surely the difference between professional and amateur is all about if what they do is their profession or not. I am a professional carpenter/joiner because I earn my living from carpentry and joinery. It would be fair to assume that I am better at carpentry and joinery than a Lawyer for...

Sorry, another sharpening thread. I'll make it quick.

+1 for the steel. If you want to get a maniacally sharp psycho edge on it then try drawing the edge across the edge of your car window at an angle as if it were the steel. Then you can more or less split atoms with it. (honest!!)

Try clicking on this link. Not sure if this is the stuff you read about but it may help. http://www.winwood-products.com/eng/tim ... ed-mdf.htm

    Coffee table WIP (ish)

Allowing for about 10% wastage it can be made from 4 boards 100mm x ??mm x 2000mm long. This gives you room on each piece to have at least two goes at getting the bevel cut really crisp and clean. I found that my table saw really mashes the cut once thrown over by 15 degrees, so I used masking...

    Coffee table WIP (ish)

It's no trade secret Marcros. The dimensions are (starting from the bottom of one side) 297mm 97m 138mm 338mm 138mm 97mm 297mm These dimensions are measured OUTSIDE the table - in other words the long side of each piece. As I said earlier the bevel angle is 15 degrees. If you have a go at...

Dominoes inserted for a test fit...... So far so good. Then the glue up.... And finally into the 'clamps' - need at least six hands to do this I used Titebond (the green bottle) for this job so it'll have to stay hog-tied until tomorrow morning. Then we'll see how it looks and if...

    Coffee table WIP (ish)

The Oak was plane and thickened down to size (100 x 27) and then jointed to make up a 400 wide board. Saw set to 105 degs (90 + 15) and then crosscut to the correct lengths. Then Dominoed using the baby Dom and 8 x 40 dominoes.
