Time to pack it all in....

Thank you all for the supportive words and comments - it genuinely means a lot. To be honest I'd be the last person to give advice about running a joinery business. With limited space and resources I was basically restricted to producing one-off joinery items - a bespoke front door, staircases...

Time to pack it all in....

Hello forum people. Its been a long old while since I was last active on the forum. I'd like to be able to tell you that my return is due to a renewed interest etc etc but unfortunately that's not the case. After much soul searching I've decided it's time to shut down the business and start...

    Workshop Options

I'd definitely go with a couple of courses of brickwork, or better still those heffin' girt trench blocks. Then go timber frame and just fly your battens down to cover the masonry work with your cladding. DPC under trench block and under soleplate. DPM over concrete and lapped up trenchblock...

    Circular saw blades question.

Probably the best known cure for constipation is to fit a positive rake blade to an old DeWalt radial arm saw and then cut a 300mm wide oak board. I believe it's also a cast iron cure for hiccups.

    Where does fraud start?

Those 'while you're here' jobs are the bane of every tradesman life. The problem is not just with the extra time and resources they suck up, but also the fact that they themselves can often end up causing other issues, or not going to plan. Once you start on a quick job - hanging a curtain rail...

    Where does fraud start?

As far as I'm concerned if my clients get what they were expecting, made or built to an acceptable quality then regardless of price or any savings I've managed to make on purchasing materials it's all good. As others have said a price is a price. No-one makes them accept it. Recently I priced...

    Advice required

Axminster are currently selling a sliding table saw outfit specifically designed to take a Dado set (which they also sell). As I understand it the problem with Stacked Dado Heads was always about stopping the mass of spinning metal within the 10 secs required - too much inertia for standard...

    Axminster sash clamps

I bought 10 of them last year and so far I've been really pleased with them. Very stable, good threads and unlikely to bow unless you go really animal on the tightening.

What to do with a split?

Clean up the split to a nice cake slice shape and then make a leg with a corresponding wedge shaped tenon to fit in. The other legs could do the same or be fitted some other way.

I've only gone and perfected sharpening! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I know!

I believe she had all her teeth removed as well, bless her.

Amateurs the lot of you. You need to take a look at this and then take a long hard look at yourselves. If you can handle it then this takes it to the next level. The one true path is there to be found for those that seek.

    Telwin MMA Inverter welder

I bought this bit of kit back in 2012 when I was doing major refurb works on my house. It was used on and off for about six months (about 10 uses in total) and then stored away. I can't tell you much about it as I'm not overly endowed with welding knowledge or expertise (it was mainly used by...

    Making Grooving Planes

I've got a feeling that Paul Sellers made one using a chisel, although it may be that he made a rebate plane rather than a grooving plane, although I would think it's much the same process.

    Plug cutters

I've got a set of the Trend ones in my toolbox for when on site. In the workshop I use the Fisch ones, which are better than any I've tried before, including the Veritas ones. Incredibly fast and smooth cutting, no skating about on start up and lovely even clean plugs. Not cheap though.

    Bandsaw setup issue

Glynne, I do indeed ignore the tension guide. I have read the blurb on the Tuffsaws site regarding blade width etc, however I found my old post that expressed my delight on using my first ever Tuffsaws blade here tuffsaws-bandsaw-blades-speechless-t92604.html and it seems I was using a 1 inch...
