    Metalworking tools for woodworkers.

For a scriber use a flat sided tungsten tile cutter. You will have squares for your woodwork, just be aware that swarf will embed itself in in brass and wood if you don't keep the job clean. Junior hacksaws are not needed. A reasonable quality 4 1/2" angle-grinder with 1/16" slitting discs...

what to do in isle of wight

Well the sight you all missed was the 8 C47 Dakota's trundling over my workshop on their way back from Normandy this afternoon, they flew over at about 300' a wonderful sight and the sound was awsome. The Harvard and the Spitfire were quite nice, but Spit's are quite frequent visitors as they...

what to do in isle of wight

Not so many these days as the scrapage scheme culled quite a few, and the roads are now salted, and if that don't get you the pot holes will. Cars lasted longer here because we were too tight to buy new ones and they don't get stressed as they have only got a maximum drive of 25 miles before...

Those from the Mainland who move here tell me there is more to do per square mile here then on the north Island. I quite enjoy my Tax free Morris Minor, and my MOT and tax Free Bedford truck, so long live old bangers, you pay, I play.

The merits of having a DOG in your workshop......

I've got fox cubs (6) in my wood store, so far all they have achieved is to play with the brush head that was lying about, leave a surprising amount of bread in return, and a strong smell, but one did sniff my foot before it rushed off. My lakeland Terrier is completely disinterested!

    WOODEN SHUTE PLANE wip

Having no knowledge on the subject what so ever, but as I understand it the idea is to apply pressure downwards, forwards, and sideways all at the same time. So what is the reason the handle is not fixed on the diagonal corner of the body of the plane?

    Battersea dogs home

Dogs can be easily traumatised by loud noises - he probably needs lots of attention, consolation, and perhaps a treat or two to take his mind of his terrible experience...... Sounds like the opening line from a personel injury lawyer making his case for a massive compensation claim.

Rules for non UK citizens buying houses in the UK?

The plain answer as with all the consumption problems, is a planned and sever drop in population, say 1% per year for the next fifty years. With the demand gone house prices will drop to the point abandoned estates can be cleared and high density housing thinned out. The modern timber frame...

The choice of metric or imperial tool sizes.

Unless you are fitting machine parts together I don't think it would matter that much. The wood doesn't know or care what system you use, but as you are based in Germany I would presume finished stock comes in metric. If you are preparing your own material from the rough then you can par off...

How many of us shave in the 'old-fashioned' way.

Cheap twin blades if I am in a rush, or a 80 year old safety with full soap and brush if I want to do it proper. I did use my late father-in-laws safety, but I lost it on holiday, gutted.

    Steel or copper banding

Anybody near you likely to use steel bandwrap on crates etc, they might have some to sell. If you don't need it in one length find a sheet metal shop that will shear a sheet up for you..

    Adze

When I was a lad the last batch of wooden 37' RNLI lifeboats that we worked on had the keels shaped by adze. This was done by the two oldest boatbuilders in the company who still had the nack. As a plater apprentice I wasn't supposed to gaze upon such things, but I did in awe and wonder -...

    Adze

Oh dear, my local hardware shop used to stock adze handles along with sledgehammer shafts and pickaxe handles, they were just in a galve dustbin. I haven't bothered to look for years, just assumed they were still there. Now I need a handle for my adze, as I found the thing the other day.
