    Welding Rods

Which, of course, is exactly what the Oxford is - a tank half-full of oil with some thick copper wire in it!

    Trend Router lathe

Well, the whole thing is about a metre long and if I recall correctly, the cable runs from end to end and back, with a few extra turns. So 3500mm should be plenty. But best to ask someone who still has the "lathe"!

    Drill bit for ceramic tiles?

If you have a Dremel or similar, those cheapo (Proops?) sets of diamond burrs are ideal for getting through the surface. Then follow up with standard masonry drill. Probably best not to use hammer facility, unless you can mount the tile on a very supportive, slightly resislient surface.

    Soft start kit

Nobody got any ideas??? Myfordman, where are you hiding?

    Welding Rods

Thanks. Can see the weight and easy start advantages, but duty cycle? According to the box, the Aldi one will do 15% at full power. No idea what the Oxford will do, but I've never beaten it yet! And it will certainly outlast me, so no case for change! Must find something else to spend kids...

    Welding Rods

They had one left in Ellon today, so I had a look, but couldn't see any real advantage over my current (sic!) setup of 100A Oxford and 140A Mig. Apart, that is, from being able to lift it and move it around without wrecking my back. But decided not to buy it. Tell me - did I make the wrong...

    Trend Router lathe

Got one from the tip in Newport Pagnell years ago and tried to get on with it but failed. Whoever it was on the forum who bought it off me probably worked out how to use it properly :?

    Soft start kit

Using worktop jig this afternoon and unusually, didn't make any stupid errors, but did suddenly wonder about something. Using one of my MOF177s, at the end of each cut, allowed the router to un-plunge and turned it off, then moved to another cut. Should you let the motor stop fully before...

Routing a groove without a fence

+1 for what Ross says about clamping a piece of straight wood across the board. And if you want to be "belt and braces", clamp another piece across the board spaced the width of the router base from the first. Then the beast can't wander.

    Raising the wreck

Thanks, dDave. I'd been thinking it was best to take off as little as was compatible with having a flat gluing surface, but your suggestion makes me think that maybe a more radical prosthesis would be both easier and mechanically stronger. Getting the enlarged bit of the hole coaxial will...

    Raising the wreck

OK, OK, yes it is a number 6. Allow an old man lapse of memory, exaggeration or typing error. Just don't ask me to admit which it was!

    Raising the wreck

Thanks to the wonderful phil.p and his donation of a Stanley lever cap, this wreck is now at least a working wreck. Hasn't been properly put back tightly together and the non-contemporary iron needs more work, but it takes a nice shaving off some Siberian larch. Now have to decide how far to...

    Treasure

At least after Brexit we won't get this sort of gloating. Sad to say :(

    Timber expansion

Am I missing something here? Earlier posts give expansion as a single linear measurement; as well as the way it is sawn, surely expansion can only sensibly be quoted as a fraction (or percentage) for a given change in moisture content?

    Gumtree rant

Just to close this off, finally sold the car to a knowledgeable lad who asked sensible questions and turned up when he said he would, with the money and didn't argue too hard over price. So it is possible! But the one who took the biscuit emailed to ask for lots of photos of the engine (for...

    Giving woodturning a bad name

It's open studios week up round Aberdeen, so went to one or two today. Included one multiple artist venue with what they said was a folk duo providing "entertainment". By singing as loudly and harshly as they could, in a relatively small space and with total disregard for the nature of the...

    Thread adaptor

Just a thought - does the school also have metalworking lathe and a colleague who knows how to drive one? Adapters are just very accurately turned and threaded objects, well within even my capacity!

    Gumtree rant

Do any forum members try to sell stuff via Gumtree? And if so, do you get what my daughter calls a load of "flakes"? Folk who contact you, ask inane questions but still give the impression they are serious, even offer a sensible cash price and fix a time. Then disappear. Just put the old...

    Mistake on chicken coop project

    is this "coopering"??

Any wooden boat builders on the forum ?.

There were one or two "punt" designs in Woodworker years ago. If you have no joy on the web, I could do a trawl(!) through my collection and see what pops up.
