    the gizmo competition

Thanks BB, indeed 'tis that I need (I use the term need loosely here). Excellent tech photography!! I'll measure thread anyway as it is same as handle obviously. Backsun.

    the gizmo competition

I like the sound of a plan, would this plan involve a treadle lathe by any chance? I can check tooth pitch and o/d easily - does this pre-date those American threads so might it be a good old Whitworth maybe? And this is turning into a thread thread. I'll be back.

    tuning handsaws

Thanks all, there does seem to be a consensus. My view now is to look more closely at the original tooth profile (at heel, they look untouched) and probably replicate that, see how that goes and as and when, maybe adjust in later sharpenings. I could separately experiment on a basket case but...

    the gizmo competition

I think we can call this closed now. Andy... 30 minutes it took you (on a phone screen too). Outstanding performance from the prof!! The 2 to the right are the pair of cutters, they fit into the hole in the thing on the left. That 'thing' then fits into the vice and is shaped so as you close the...

    wadkin PK restoration

Hi Wallace, I read the chat above re potential values. It's probably a sad fact that some of that old iron will go to scrap. Some time ago I got involved in finding the new home for the Wadkin belt-drive workshop in Minster, Kent. From memory 7 machines, (including a fine ready-to-go 3ph massive...

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Morning Adam! - pleased you like it of course. I thought it may be useful given the type of work you do and the scale etc. Didn't see any point remaining anonymous as you would have known where it came from I expect, hence the swing-tag. (Did you like my ironic 'pity the poor sod who gets Adam...

    wadkin PK restoration

Not been here for a while, but the finished saw looks absolutely brilliant (p9 will save time). I guess you got the blade sharpened by now - noticed the smoke coming off it on the video. 14.5k visits to this thread... shows there is still a bit of interest in good old Wadkin =D>

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Very modest Waka - the metal and wood turning here is top-notch. What are the woods by the way?

    tuning handsaws

Sorry Richard, Matthew uses the term slope to refer to the vertical component in fleam angle, I don't mean rake at all. Isn't fleam a compound angle? - generally say 20 degrees horizontal and 20 vertical? I'm not expecting to alter rake at all, and really this saw just needs a lick over anyway...

    tuning handsaws

I recently got an old Spear & Jackson panel saw 22" 10tpi and it is generally excellent but a little dull around the middle, teeth at toe and heel are excellent and there is no significant fall in tooth height in the central area. So it needs a sharpen/tune and I'm fine with that but began...

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Seen all these wonderful gifts, but not seen many in action yet: Works a real treat - I actually made an accidental discovery. I like those drywall screws for basic carcase etc work (a sub-shelf for a few planes here) but my No2 bit never fitted nicely and I assumed it was a bad bit (oops...

    the gizmo competition

I recently acquired this thing. It's a vice of course, but it's quite rare to find them with almost all the loose bits: So, WITHOUT trawling the internet (have to be on trust, that will) - what are the more obscure objects for?? We have 2 awls, 2 screw driver bits, a chisel*... and 3...

    SS GIFT VIEWING 2013

Sorry for the delay... 'ran out of film'?? That's like 'sorry Miss, the dog ate it'. Got a really excellent pair of hex drivers, with Festool bits: The metal-working here is very impressive, note the ferrules are actually made from solid stock (they might be called something else when they...

    Joseph Marples try squares

Jacob's point about balance / stability is well worth noting and almost always overlooked by the makers I think. Obviously the square is held whilst actually marking, but the number of times I have wanted to leave it there while I reach for something or wander away - maybe that is why I have...

    record dust extractor popping noise

Handy thread - I have exactly the same issues with my DX3000, although I notice the left motor (switch) does the sparking/popping more than the right. If anyone finds the cap nice n cheap I may get around to sorting it. I always use one motor only and try to alternate. I tried both motors once...

    Joseph Marples try squares

They are nicely done, and from an excellent stable (nicely seasonal, that). I have a large one (10" approx from memory) and use it occasionally. But for everyday joint etc work I use engineer's squares (cheap, robust and do the job very well I think). I also have one of these Japanese squares...

    paring chisel

Just a few thoughts. The MB vee referred to in the quote seems to refer to a symmetrical vee (it mentions flipping the chisel over quickly). This would presumably place the following cut bang centre on the line, often not what you want? And was this practice a reflection of the thicker blades in...

    'ageing' pine / softwoods

Many thanks everyone. I'm quite sure you are right Andy, I won't much like it - but it's for an office reception and they want that aged pine look (to go with other stuff they have in there), so I don't need to live with it :) As I am reluctant to mess about with acids etc (though caustic soda...

    'ageing' pine / softwoods

Thanks Mark - had a look at the FW article, sounds promising although his description of colour sounds quite brown still. He does refer to old pine look though. Need to find a local source for nitric acid in smaller volumes, just to test. Don't know about oxalic, will do a bit of research. For...

    'ageing' pine / softwoods

Any ideas please? There are constraints of course! I need it for work surfaces that will have a fairly hard life (desk-tops, not workbench type hard). So a wax surface is probably not good, I assume it would wear through. I've seen Le Salvager use a dark wax liberally to good effect but not here...
