    Anyone shopped using Turners Retreat?

Mistakes happen and given that everyone raves about the service from Robert Sorby I'm sure this will be sorted out to your satisfaction. Mud sticks and it's a shame this has been posted before Turners Retreat have been given a chance to rectify this. Hopefully it will be done and you'll let us know?

    Sanding acrylic

Another tip is to use a lubricant of some kind when sanding the acrylics. We've found our Lemon Oil to be very good at this (it can be used on timber too for a 'dry sanding' type effect) although I'm sure other products will do the job.

    Kidsafe friction polish?

No problem John, the annoying ones are those that email us via the website to ask a question that is already answered there. I'm a bit slow answering those.. Yes, using EN-71 rated products with each other is perfectly ok. Strangely enough we enquired about having our Spirit Stain range tested...

    Kidsafe friction polish?

The rubbish bin? This information is available on our website, on the FAQ page should you need to refer to it again.

    Kidsafe friction polish?

Hi All Friction Polish isn't tested for toy safety (the relevant test is EN-71). That's not to say that it wouldn't pass, but more importantly that we don't really think it's a suitable finish for toys etc, it isn't really hardwearing enough from an appearance point of view. Our thinking is...

    Pink Panther remake...

This was done with Steve Martin as the inspector. I haven't seen it so I can't really comment, but the clips I did see of it didn't appeal to me. My teenage children have seen it though (and I guess it would be aimed at them really) and they absolutely loved it and can quote chunks of dialogue...

    Friction Polish

Hmm, imitation, flattery... :) Anyway, couple of things to add... Firstly, apart from the obvious things about putting potentially harmful products into bottles that don't have appropriate warning labels, be careful too about keeping Melamine Lacqer (or any cellulose based product) in a...

how the credit crunch will affect Britain.

You know, I can't help thinking that the vision of the 2012 Olympics shown here is still preferable to what we're going to get...

    Friction Polish

Nope. But the base is meths (or near as dammit) so if you need to thin it down at all this can be used or better still, Spirit Thinners.

Anyone else been to the Midlands Tool show in Coventry?

Hmmm, not sure I can agree with these comments... Not being able to hear the demos doesn't make them rubbish, just under-presented. I haven't tried to watch any so I can' t say fully, but I think that's a bit too dismissive. As for 'crap looking tools', from where I'm sitting at the moment I...

    SK Midlands Show

Hi all, greetings from the show on Saturday morning. Nice to see people yesterday, was that a hard time Chas? You should see some of the people we get, best one yesterday was the guy standing in front of our shelves asking 'I've looked but can't see any, do you sell polish?' Anyway, the...

Disappointing really, the site is run by GMC; a more subtle approach could have brought them more traffic without the bad feelings. Still, I guess there's no such thing as bad publicity...

    Sanding sealer

Pine is often a problem when staining and will often give a patchy effect. This is one of the reasons coloured waxes became so popular as they will give a much more even effect. Chas is right that usually stain goes on unsealed wood, it needs to be able to soak in to work and if the wood is...

Thanks Andrew, and for answering the question in the way I should have asked it! You can tell I'm not mechanically minded! Thanks again

    Drill Chuck Sizes

Hi Sorry if I'm being lazy asking the question, I've had a quick look around but can't get a 'simple' answer... Is there a 'standard' maximum size for what will fit into a drill chuck? Thanks in advance Terry

    Brummie Bash Acrylic Challenge

Hi All Thanks Chas for distributing the blanks for us and for having a go with them, and also to Paul for his contribution. I'm looking forward to seeing more soon! The translucency of the blanks was a little disappointing for us but it seems this is a common factor and relatively easy to...

    Friction Polish issue

Hi again Loz Friction Polish works best on small items, the nine inch platter is probably at the limit of what we'd recommend using on the lathe, the other item you mentioned shouldn't have been a problem though. Have you sealed your work before using the Friction Polish? If so, what with...

    Friction Polish issue

Hi Loz Couple of quick questions: How big is the item you're polishing? What sort of speed are you working at? How much pressure are you applying when buffing (I know that's not an easy one to answer, we recommend a 'firm' pressure which isn't very scientific but hopefully you'll know what I...
