DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

Has nobody produced a rubberised disc/cone patch you can stick over a small hole in the DPM with an upstand specially designed to seal to conduits? You can’t just produce extra DPM around the cut to secure to a tube Without rucking everything up, but an add on cone would solve the problem.

    New workshop for 2020

For a polythene vapour barrier under the floor. I guess it’s to stop moisture going down. I’ve got to put barrier on the ceiling as well to stop moisture going up.

    New workshop for 2020

Had a sabbatical at the weekend, This morning cleared everything up and general reorganisation in readiness for cladding. Started fixing the corner trims at the rear, and setting the rear door lining in the opening so I could fit door trims, Back door and frame now fit lovely. Then a text...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

When you reach ridge, You will have a batten almost directly above the previous one for the final tile. I marked each one with a scribe line. I hooked the tile on the rivet, offered up a slate from the opposite side, sighted a 10mm ridge gap, scribed and cut each one. It took 30 seconds a tile...

Also take in to account, whilst the tile is 300m wide, you will create a gap of 4-5mm between each tile. Over 24 tiles this could amount to nearly a half tile extra. You will find 7200mm/300mm isn’t 24, more like 23.5. The head lap at the ridge I ended up with was 150mm instead of the 110mm I’d...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

For a start, Based on a 7.2 x 4.5 building, the rafter length will be 2.5 metres at 25 degree pitch. You’ll need another row of 24 to cover the 2.5 metres each side, you will need an extra 24 Tiles for each double bottom starter courses, and 24 more each side for a top row. So total for both...

    New workshop for 2020

That’s the one I bought, I was expecting 120gsm, but it came as 135gsm. Many others are only 100gsm. There is an undocumented feature of the Hardie carbide knife, if you undo the two screws, there is a single carbide tip the other end. You turn the blade round and put the two screws back in...

    New workshop for 2020

I used this membrane it came as 135gsm, it’s really tough as it’s designed for roofing, and so can be used for walls. The two 50m rolls were £97 total. It’s 1.5m wide. I’ve probably got 10m left. Superb membrane, espescially at the price, kept the rain out ten days ago and water just beads on...

    New workshop for 2020

Mr Bacardi is going down nicely tonight. Working out by sq m is ok, but I worked out I’d use 13.5 slates per row, and twenty rows per side. I ignored the 1m notched bit. That gave me 540 Each row was going to have a tile and half one end or the other, so that’s 20 a side, 40 in total, these...

    New workshop for 2020

Well, the rains never came last night as promised, I had covered the last hole just in case. A late start today, but was eager to crack on with the last fifty slates. I started in earnest and it soon become apparent I had too much material on the roof to move at all. I needed a system of...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

Have done a bit more probing on the summer house, it seems more like a raised deck, open fronted but with 3/4 roofed, back and two side half walls. Got to take a BBQ on deck and have somewhere comfortable to sit in the shade. She wasn’t enamoured by your suggestion, no point putting her comments...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

I don’t think it’s possible to get the numbers exact first delivery. I had a couple of top ups as the work progressed, partly because I didn’t want everything on site all at once wrecking the lawn so I phased it as a JIT system. Worked really well. I’ve got one length of 4x2 and one length of...

    New workshop for 2020

There’s approx 520 nails per kilo, I’ll probably use 1200 of the 1500. The cembrit in 25degree were listed as unavailable when I placed my order. With no lead times I just went with the Eternit duo pitch 25degree at £32 +vat. They are 900mm long, the cembrit are 500 I think. These screw on with...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

I was quite surprised the quantity of joining/fixing/bracing hardware, be it Tec screws, nails, angle brackets, coach bolts, etc. I have gone in to my fourth box of 1100 paslode nails, 90mm for frame work, 50mm for OSB and 63mm for roofing battens and cladding counter battens. I know I’ve over...

    New workshop for 2020

I opened my third kilo of copper nails today, I reckon they will finish the job without too many left. The rivets I bought a box of 1000, and will use only maybe half that. They’re not overly expensive, so no great shakes. The tiles on the starter courses, edges and tops don’t get one, so not...

    New workshop for 2020

They’re dodgy knock off Marley Thrutone. I bought 440 singles and 12 doubles from the Bay For £250, leftover from a job. I stored them standing and water had dripped on some of the packs. When it dries slowly the salts leech, but is not permanent. Once laid they are really solid, let’s face it...

    New workshop for 2020

They are certainly going to look sleek when the white bloom is washed ff with the rains. I did clean some up, but was too time consuming to do what will happen naturally. People passing thought I’d used reclaims to give a ‘been there a long time look’. The missus likes it that they are not shiny...

    New workshop for 2020

A steady start with the first Starting courses taking a while to setup and lay. Then it was up and away. This side is a plain oblong, single verge that I can’t access so am working away from it as it’s safer. Managed to get 120+ slates on, so just under half. I think there will be 270 on this...

    New workshop for 2020

Cheers Lons Yes, knees are going through it, and a sore behind sitting on hard square lathe edges. I’m not built for this, and I did say to the missus it’s one job I may have to hire in. But, here we are, 50% complete with the more straightforward roof to do. It’s slow for me, but quite...

DBT85s Workshop - Moved in and now time to fit it out

Now it gets real. :D Once the hole is dug, things really start to get exciting, no turning back once the first hit of cash has been made. I’m already looking at a £2000 overspend against budget due to the materials planning insisted on, especially the Hardie cladding which has come in at...
