Man Made Board for Kitchen Units

Welcome to the forum Ron. Birch ply is a great material for kitchen cabinets, but pretty expensive this side of the pond. We tend to use moisture resistant MDF (MR MDF) which machines and takes paint far better than ordinary MDF, or a good quality melamine faced chipboard (MFC) which is also...

    Thicknessing wth a router

Can't see the problem. You wouldn't think twice before cutting a groove, removing maybe 10mm material, so why should there be a problem removing what in most cases will just be 1mm -2mm? A far more important consideration, imho, is that you should use the right cutter. Forget the ubiquitous...

    Planer thicknesser

Whilst I'm sure the Sedgewick is a tasty piece of kit, just make sure you have the room to place it in a permanent position in your workshop. I find that space required expands faster than I can create it. If you want to thickness a 3m length of timber you'll need about 7m of space to feed it...

    More Irish jokes

OK. Having seen what you made of my last offering, what will you do with this? A cow, an ant and an old fart are debating on who is the greatest of the three of them. • The cow said, "I give 20 quarts of milk every day and that's why I am the greatest!" • The ant said, "I work day and...

    More Irish jokes

I am actually 1/4 Irish! I believe the same jokes are told by Irishmen of Kerrymen, and in the RAF the pilots tell the jokes about navigators or those in "the regiment" - it's what makes the world go round.

    More Irish jokes

John O'Reilly hoisted his beer and said, "Here's to spending the rest of me life, between the legs of me wife!" That won him the top prize at the pub for the best toast of the night! He went home and told his wife, Mary, "I won the prize for the Best toast of the night." She said, "Aye...

    How true!

My comment wasn't aimed at all vegetarians, just the ones who try to force their views on the rest of us - but if the cap fits etc. We were once on a group camping trip in the USA with 8 others and two people would do the evening meal in rotation, meaning that your turn came around every 5...

    How true!

Love the "vegetarians" definition. Why won't they accept that having fought my way to the top of the food chain I don't want a diet of lentils and leaves?

    Another one of those 'Fly-tying-boxes'

Thanks Andy. Just the info I was looking for. I'll give that a try when i've finished my kitchen, utility room, re-landscaping the garden, painted the house ....................

    Another one of those 'Fly-tying-boxes'

Lovely work Andy. Can you give a little more detail on your method of inlaying the black lines (ebony?). Do you use a router or scratch stock? Also some info on how you get a precise fit for the veneer on the top would be welcome please.

    scribing to fit conundrum

How about scribing a shorter offcut of something, like mdf or hardboard and then use that as a template to cut the veneered board?

    Letter Carving Question

Sometimes the obvious is the way to go. For a beginner (that includes me), either "Roman", or something derived from "Roman" like "Felix Titling" or "Perpetua" make "carving friendly" letters. In my very limited experience I have just played around with the letters in MS Word, using something...

External Folding Sliding (Bifold) Doors - loads of WIP pics

Jason - presumably by lockable flush bolts, you mean these? I think they are common to the whole Centor range. I will be getting the magnetic catches. At the moment I just have a foamy pad that came with the glazing stuck to a door where the handle would otherwise make contact to...

External Folding Sliding (Bifold) Doors - loads of WIP pics

Thanks Paul. And just to prove that these are "foldy slidy byoots" rather than "sticky binding b******s" here's a quick video of them in action! :D When the building work is finished a kitchen will need to go in that space so rest assured I'll be back for more advice!
