    Wood sample set

My first thought was to establish whether or not it is in alphabetical order, if so it would show one comes before number three which I agree with custard looks very like Afrormosia , and looking in my Titmuss commercial timbers of the world 1971 leaves Abura, Acacia and Afara but before you...

How to make French cherrywood table fit for everyday use?

In some ways I think there is nothing sadder than an immaculate table top, I like to see that my furniture has been used, looked after yes but used as well, as Phil.p has said wax it and use it, the wax should take and repair the scratches as they develop just use a saucer for your cup of tea!

    New Varnish 'Decaying'?!

Quote "Just like the varnish has gone 'dull'." sounds to me you have got what you asked for - a matt finish. Try a test on a fresh piece of wood and make sure you are happy with the product cos it sounds to me you want something a bit shinier ie satin.

Finishing options to tie different oak colours together

Sorry I didn't see your reply. The Van **** I know comes as crystals you dissolve a small amount (tea spoon) in hot water (pint) to make a kind of tea (some will use cold tea) I got mine ages ago from John Mylands but any good finishing supplier should stock it. and yes seal it in with any of...

    workshop in oxfordshire

Hi it might help if you elaborate a bit, do you have a workshop you want to share or do you want to use an existing one or jointly set one up? This question often comes up and is always a bit vague as to what people are actually looking for. Hope you get sorted.

    Steaming wood.

For what it's worth I accidentally steamed some white Beech veneer that I was laying up in the heated press just by getting it a bit too hot, I guess the heat along with the moisture from the glue basically cooked the veneer, it looked fine as steamed Beech goes so I would guess it may not be to...

    The Lamp post post.

Just to clarify things I presumed that the sign would say "danger high voltage" etc. re the lamp on the post but now I realize that the danger is from the "nearby" over head wires you can see in the picture which I imagine really are carrying High voltages and you wouldn't want to lift your self...

Finishing options to tie different oak colours together

Hi Si That's a fab looking horse you've made (you don't make it easy for yourself do you) I think I would use weak solution of Van ****, a water stain, the first coats will raise the grain but can be sanded back again, I find water stain is so mild that you can go over again and again to build...

    The Lamp post post.

This was going to be a funny post about heath and safety gone mad again but in the end it's turned into a warning about jumping to conclusions before the facts are known! I pass this lamp post on the way home from work and it's been bugging me since they put it up over a year ago. Can...

Poor adhesion with paper backed veneer and cascamite.

As I said I have never used paper backed veneer but I imagine it's main market is using it like a laminate as in formica, for site work and really awkward or one off jobs where you can't use a press of any kind so the contact adhesive would then make sense.

Poor adhesion with paper backed veneer and cascamite.

What do you mean by peeling off? Is it peeling taking the paper with it or does the paper stick to the cascamiite? And how are you pressing it, have you got a nice even pressure over the whole area of veneer? I've never seen or used paper backed veneer but can't think why it should not work.
