    Drawback of thick irons

The thread - according to the late David Leach's site - is 9/32" 24tpi. Personally, I don't believe it's a good idea to fit both a thicker iron and thicker cap-iron to an old Record or Stanley - for exactly the reason the OP has found. If your existing iron is in reasonable nick (especially if...

1980 hand drill turns out surprisingly good

Catalogue picture from here http://oldtoolheaven.com/hand_drills/drill5.htm (I'm sure the Prof knows of this site already  ) They added the idler pinion from 1921 and ended production in 1944 My No.200 catalogue illustration. These were made from 1914 to 1935. Cheers, Vann.

1980 hand drill turns out surprisingly good

Hi Andy. I've got big brother - Millers Falls No.200 breast drill. Like yours, this one has the two speeds with knurled gear change, and the ratchet. It also has a detachable "auxilliary" breast plate... ...and when extra leverage is required, the crank handle can be rotated 90degrees...

New Graphite Clifton 5 1/2 Passaround

Thanks Peter for a very informative answer. Fortunately here in New Zealand our "native" timbers are more like your English trees than the knarly silcon impregnated timber found across the ditch in Australia. So my old Clifton irons might still be usable #-o . I'm sad to say I haven't used...

New Graphite Clifton 5 1/2 Passaround

As I'm very slightly, just out of Zone 1, I'll have to settle for watching the videos. I'm looking forward seeing them. That's a shame. I liked the deep stamp. A bit of the past, surviving into modern times. Like the BRG, I'll miss it. Hi Peter. What is the expected effect of the cryogenic...

    Shoulder brace drills. ?

That's probably Goodell-Pratt - they're a US company, taken over by Millers-Falls. If you google Millers Falls there's an excellent website that depicts just about every dill, brace, etc made by either company. Cheers, Vann.

No point in arguing with the OP. He will NEVER admit it when he is wrong. Cheers, Vann.

    How many chisels and gouges?

It's a good thing Alf doesn't call in here anymore. She had a real weakness for a nice secondhand chisel. She's probably still well ahead of most of us. As for me - I'm not saying either  Cheers, Vann. ps: I think I've got more planes than chisels.... 8)

    name stamp

There was a thread 9 - 12 months ago about having stamps made for stamping wood. Formites seemed very happy with the stamps made by a particular small firm IIRC. You'll have to do a search on here. Cheers, Vann.

    Dating Stanley bench planes

Hi Mr P. What's the right hand plane in the picture? It's neither Record nor Stanley. Just curious. Cheers, Vann.

    Dating Stanley bench planes

Blood & **** is only for USA made Stanleys - and possibly Canadian Stanleys. Records started as clones of USA type 13/14. UK Stanleys started as clones of USA type 16. Cheers, Vann.

WoodRiver 5 1/2 plane pass around???

Me too - I wish. I bet no one is willing to pay postage to New Zealand :( (and I'm too tight to pay for postage back again  ). Cheers, Vann.

Another sharpening thread, but with a twist...

I believe they've just unearthed an 11th century diamond plate in Sussex - the Piltdown Plate... I'll get me coat  Cheers, Vann.

lever cap damage - advice needed

I thought the illegal drugs were supposed to steady the hands.... Thanks Eric. I thought I could guess at what you really meant, now I can be sure. I hadn't considered fitting the lever-cap to the cap-iron (or chip-breaker or back-iron), figuring that pressure almost anywhere on the 'hump' of...

lever cap damage - advice needed

The damage doesn't look too bad. As others have said, just sharpen the iron and try it. I've noticed that the lever caps on Record SS planes are a little shorter than their regular planes - so if you do need to file the cap iron shorter, that'll be the perfect excuse to fit a 2-piece cap...
