Having just read the review on the WoodRiver 5 ½ Plane (Andy King) and am impressed by what he has said about them. So I was wondering what people who have them think of them. From what I have read and seen they look a real contender for any workshop. I must admit I am temped to get one, but like all, I am tight with my money ( I like to try before I buy type of thing). So instead of just reading about them would any of our benefactors (Hand tool retailers) be willing to sponsor a pass around with one, or provide any thoughts on them?

Many thanks

Richard

Funnily enough, I am torn between a Woodriver #6 type 3 and Quengshang #6 for my Christmas Present from my wife. I know they come from the same factory but am not aware of the differences between them (if any).

I have a selection of older Record and Stan;ey planes picked up from here and from the bay (#3, #4, #4½, #5, #5½ and #6) but I much prefer my Quengshang 62 and Veritas 4½ so would like to add a modern #6 to my stable.

If a pass around was forthcoming, I would be seriously interested in trying one out.

I have Peter's 5 1/2 at the moment and will be doing a review shortly if that's any help.

Hi guys I am more than happy to organise a pass around.

I will have to do this tomorrow as I am heading off down to London Guildhall now to become a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers!

For those that aren't able to do the pass around - as Fromey said, you can come along to the Hand Tool Day on 29th November to see and try for yourself. I will also be at the Harrogate Show the weekend before ...

Cheers

Peter

That will be useful too, the more information the better I think.

That would be great Peter, as I subscribe to Rob Cosman's site I am drawn more towards the Woodriver than the Quengshang anyway, and the price difference between them is small (if any). I already have the Quengshang 62 with it's 3 blades so am aware of the quality they can produce. I do not yet have a Bedrock style plane so am interested to see the difference there would be against a Bailey type.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much (if at all) the IBC blades that Rob sells are better than the standard blade that comes with the Woodriver?

Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers? New fangled upstarts! The Worshipful Company of Upholders (established 1360) is where it's at. Chippendale was a member. Still, congratulations Peter.

Ed I will put the IBC blade and chip breaker in with the WoodRiver 5 1/2 so you can test it for yourself.

Would much rather see one of the new Cliftons getting the publicity of a pass-around

Hi Max

That sounds like a great idea and I'm happy to put a new Graphite 5 1/2 out for a pass around - I'm just awaiting our stock to come in, but I will organise a pass around over the next few days (I'll start a new thread for the Clifton) ...

Cheers

Me too - I wish. I bet no one is willing to pay postage to New Zealand :( (and I'm too tight to pay for postage back again  ).

Cheers, Vann.
