    Thicknessing

I would thickness enough to get it a regular thickness and then flip it end to end each cut taking 2mm passes bringing it down to around 22mm. Leave it to settle for a week or so before re surfacing and final thicknessing. Cheers Peter

Workbench aprons - do they need to be square to the top?

The leg nearest the camera looks in twist to the far one, is this causing the problem or just a optical illusion? You could measure the leg frames top and bottom to see if they are parallel. Cheers Peter

Workbench aprons - do they need to be square to the top?

Better to get the bench true and square rather than spend a lifetime trying to adapt to it. Cheers Peter

Review : Chisel and Plane Sharpening - Peter Sefton

When teaching sharpening I will often show students how you can improve a blade from not cutting hair to razor sharp cutting hair in two or three seconds on a strop, I says it's sharper-you may say I waxed the sole of my plane, what are you on about? I know we cut timber not hair but it's a...

Woodford Tooling - any experience? Damage from broken blade

I only have very limited experience of Woodford, I bought some planer blades for my Hammer and Felder planers from Woodford. They were half the price of Felders but very poor quality. The lady in the office said she would refund me but they never did, life is too busy for me to chase these...

Review : Chisel and Plane Sharpening - Peter Sefton

I believe stropping is sharpening the blade and improves the cutting edge, it also polishes the steel if a fine cutting compound is used, or scratches it if it's a course abrasive is let loose on the cutting edge. Stropping can also round and ruin the edge if not done correctly, as will poor...

    New square required!

Yes you are correct this does work but I have used this method more in laying out footings and brickwork than in furniture. Cheers Peter

    New square required!

I am afraid measuring diagonals does not guarantee squareness, trapezoids have the same diagonal lengths but are not square. Cheers Peter

    Sharpening using valve lapping paste

I have tried a similar process in the past with diamond pastes on cast plates, it works but is messy. I used to stock the Veritas lapping plate and grits but found I never recommended them to customers and eventually we stopped having them on the shelf. Cheers Peter

    New square required!

Indeed, thus using an inaccurate square leaves you believing you are marking out correctly but you will have accuracy issues later in the making process. Use an accurate square for piece of mind. Cheers Peter
