if yo have a board 30mm thick and need 18mm
do you?
resaw or just keep taking off 1mm
I am not concerned about the wastage factor

Dozen passes through the thicknesser, job done.

Even resawn you may want to allow for a couple of passes to accurately size anyways.

Timber which has been kiln dried recently can suffer from tension in the inner and outer layers of material which can pull the timber into a curve if you take to much material from one side. It's advisable to reduce the thickness steadily taking material from alternate sides and checking after each pass to try and keep it straight.
I currently have a batch of oak which can be distorted by simply sinking a rebate in a straight piece. Time will improve matters but it can be a costly problem.
