Just returned and all I say is I'm glad I went.

Wasn't planning on going yesterday morning but read something I wish I hadn't so decided to go ASAP to prevent any further problems.

So if you are planning on going hurry up because you will hear things and it might take some of the enjoyment away.

ttfn,
Carl child of the seventies.

Star Wars Useless Fact no 58498

In France Darth Vador is known as Dark Vador, as the French cannot pronounce the 'th' in Darth :D

Pretty much this ...

I was surprised that Luke turned out to be a Sith Lord all along. Still, great film, really enjoyed it.

Which I might not have seen yet. This may be a poor attempt at a joke

*punches Morfa
Don't get to the cinema these days with the kids.
Had a family vote. Star Wars or the Happy Dinosaur or what ever it's called.
:| Disowned my 5 year old son.

"Awesome!!!" Seriously?? I'm in denial over the new one, followed the entire franchise from a young man through the steady decline in good writing and believable storyline, the killer on this new one for me is two-fold, JJ Abrams seemingly hit and miss run with films (Star Trek Into Darkness was appalling, certainly compared to the immaculate reboot he managed with the first one) and that Goddamned trailer with Han saying to Chewie 'I think we're home!' What!?? Whaaat!?? Han would NEVER say that!!

I'll wait till the dust blows over, If in six months IMDB and Metacritic etc rates it over a 9.0, I *MAY* take the plunge and watch it, till then any spoilers I encounter I will take in my stride.

Just my twopennorth.

Thanks Pete that were grand or do I mean proper gradely.

JSW,

Oh go on you know you want to embrace the dark side and decide for yourself and this is def more like the original trilogy than the prequels 1999+

Warnig Empire Strikes Back spoiler from the Simpsons.

Yes mate I really DO want to go and see it, but the hype and media circus surrounding it is putting me off immensely, as well as the aforementioned criticisms.

Thanks BTW for the heads-up on it being more Original Trilogy than prequel, that had it's flaws also though, Ewoks anyone? New Hope and Empire were flawless, (IMO) Phantom Menace could have been great, and personally I enjoyed, and continue to do so, with the obvious caveat regarding a certain Mr. Binks, the rest though were so-so.

Just as an aside, I shop in Asda a lot, and I am sick to the back teeth of Asda FM plugging Jurassic World as the best in the series, no, it most definitely is not, and "Chris Pratt - New Superstar!", every time I hear that I mutter to myself "No he's not ..... he's a naughty boy!"

Works for me.

I think the BBC must have invested in it, the plugging it's getting. I must admit having absolutely no interest in films it irritates me intensely. I wouldn't walk 50 yards to see any film that's ever been made. :D

Better not mention that I went to New York in 1999 then Phil, thank you Star Wars if it wasn't for you I never would have been up the World Trade Centre.

JSW,
In Return of the Jedi I think the origianl plan was the wookie home world not bleeping Ewoks but changed for the kids / merchandising. Even with the Ewok flaws its still lot better than the first one 1977, wow thats slow to watch these days. Empire is indeed flawless and the less said about JaJa the better.

I can re-assure you no JaJa or Ewoks in the new one or an equivalent. None of them are citizen Kane but it is a rip roaring hollywood blockbuster made to entertain.

I prefer a good hard sci-fi like 2001 ASO so I rarely get that itch scratched, for the same reason I've found none of the Star Wars films particularly enjoyable, so I'll see bits of it when someone else is watching it on TV.

That's the whole point though, I don't want a rip roaring hollywood blockbuster made to entertain, I want good old fashioned story telling. Slow or not, A New Hope had that by the spadeful. And Empire only fulfilled on that.

Does the new one have as strong a bunch of (virtually) unheard of actors as ANH had? (with the obvious exclusion of Alec Guiness) Does it develop those characters? Is it effects laden to the point the story becomes second fiddle to the pyrotechnics?

I want to see it, I want to enjoy it, I want to see this once great franchise achieve the greatness it aspired to. I want to see JJ Abrams succeed! His past repertoire is extraordinary IMO, just the occasional glitch ...

We could do with a movies sub-forum to General Chat (no offence Phil.p) I could talk Movies and TV as long as, as long as .. well woodworking I guess.

Sorry hard to discuss without giving things away but its gets a thumbs up from this 40 year old. Didn't bother with the recent Bond after being dissapointed by the over hyped Skyfall and the one before that was dire Q of Solice (maybe a writers strike to blame) I did rate Casino Royale. Most of the recent hollywod blockbusters I've seen on the telly have bored the pants off me with far too much action but I haven't seen that many in recent years.

So in brief if you liked the originals you should like this, plus the sooner you see it the less chance you have of hearing about X.

Hmmm, Ok thanks for the input Mr_P, Now I'm seriously intrigued.

Yes new/unfamiliar actors.
More interaction acting with real sets.
Strong characters with strong portrayal.
A true, in my opinion, follow on from Jedi .

Being a fan it's what I had hoped for. Although new characters and elements are introduced it is unmistakably a Star Wars movie. The action and story are just right, like him or hate him JJ and team have got it right.
It's not a re-boot , the series doesn't need it, it's the next chapter linking the old to the new/next ones.
I suppose many would be sceptical given the time between this one and the last releases, but I really don't think anyone (maybe that applies just to the real fans) should be disappointed.
If anyone who doesn't like change or has feared the Disney , and maybe the big/bigger business, influence need to go see it. Lucas has left the story, history, characters and our beloved memories in safe hands.
